New Hampshire Photographer Looking for Subjects for Film & Photo Project.

New Hampshire Photographer Looking for Subjects for Film & Photo Project.

CASTING CALL: I am looking for a film/photo subject. This is a new offering from Joe Martin Photography called “Reflections”
I will be creating a memory keepsake. It will be the legacy of a loved one. It could be your mom or your dad. We will be creating a “Legacy Film” This film will contain still photos overlaid with an audio interview/conversation and video clips. There will be no posed photos. It will be all documentary style. I am looking for someone that is 70-80+ years of age that is outgoing and willing to spend 2 hours working together to create this film. Someone that is open to share a bit about themselves and their life.
It then may be used as a record of the legacy to be left behind once this love one has moved on from this world. How great would it be to have a record a film of one of your parents. There will be no cost to the family that is chosen and there may be more then one family picked for this project. Please message me here to see if you have a family member that is the right fit for this project. I look forward to hearing form you. (must me local to the North Conway area)

Engagement Session at Wells Beach Maine | Sarah & Tom | New Hampshire Wedding Photographers Blog

Engagement Session at Wells Beach Maine | Sarah & Tom | New Hampshire Wedding Photographers Blog

On April 10th of 2016, I had the pleasure of shooting a wedding engagement session on the beach in Wells, Maine. The young couple is from Maine and me, being from New Hampshire, we decided to meet in the middle on the Maine coast. It is early spring in New England so we had hopped for a sunny and warm day. Luckily, we got both. I met Sarah and Tom at Wells Harbor but with high tide, we chose to head right to the beach. The beach was nearly empty with just a few others there. I shared what we would be doing before we met, on the phone and through email prior to meeting that day. I shared some tips for makeup, hair and clothes, reminding them that being comfortable in what they are wearing and being authentically themselves is important for the energy of the shoot itself.

We started off walking down the beach and I had them walk away from me to a point then turn and come back. It made for some great wide shots of them together as they held hands and spent a few minutes together. Once they had returned, I asked them if they wanted to head up the sand dunes. They spent some time together at the top there too and shared smiles and showed affection and anticipation of their special day, which I was hoping to capture. I then asked them to stand apart on the dunes. I always like to add a few of these artsy, “together, but separate individuals” style shots to a photo shoot also. They capture the energy of two lives becoming one and their individual journey as people.

After they posed facing me with no emotion, I asked them to face each other and walk towards each other. I love the resulting photos. On the way back to the cars, we headed up to the rock jetty for a few more poses before we ended their engagement session. I am looking forward to their wedding day at the end of this summer. I truly enjoy and highly recommend engagement shoots. When a couple is comfortable with their photographer before the wedding day, it makes for a beautiful and smooth experience once their big day arrives I am grateful for this experience with this special couple and I look forward to capturing their wedding day, with their vision and expectations as my focus, in addition to my personal style and passion for what I love to do

Kennett High School Senior Portrait Session With Maddy | New Hampshire Photographers Blog

Last week, I met with Maddy and her aunt, to create some senior photos, as well as capturing a memory of this time in her life. I had never met Maddy until the day the shoot, and we began at her family home. We used the tall grass next to her home to capture the first few photos. Then we moved to some colored leaves to capture the beautiful fall color. In just a short time, we moved on to my property just down the road from her home. I like to toss a cool chair in a nature environment and use that as a added prop for some shots. I get a lot of comments about my chair photos and they have become one of my “signature shots.” When we were done with the chair shots, we set up on a nearby stone wall. I had her aunt, Lee, hold a light for me to take a few head shots. It is always nice to involve the teens family in the shoot. It makes for a very fun experience. Thanks, Leigh for all of your help! Once home, I loaded the session into my computer and went to work in Lightroom (a popular photo editing software.) I aim for between 30-40 finished edited portraits and I ended up delivering sixty two images, when all the photos were done. Maddy, I hope your final year of school is the best you can make it! Good luck as you head off in to the world.

Lake Ossipee Senior Portraits | Camp Calumet Photo Session | New Hampshire Photographers Blog

New Hampshire Wedding Photographers Blog: 199

Traveling for things you want is a big part of life, for most people. Today, a mother and daughter drove four hours from Connecticut to to meet me in New Hampshire, to create senior portraits. Emma, the daughter, wanted to have her photos done in a very special place, from her childhood and teens years. She not only attended Camp Calumet, in Ossipee, New Hampshire, as a girl, but then returned as a teen to work at the camp as a lifeguard. Not only was the location a place filled with childhood memories, but it was also breathtakingly beautiful! There were had so many spots to shoot from. Ossipee lake with the mountains in the background. We had a forest full of colored leaves and an adorable wooden bridge with a dry river under it, to choose from for photos. She really wanted a photo on the lifeguard stand, where she worked and created so many memories.  As we made photo memories of this time in her life, I could tell that it was truly bittersweet for Emma and her mother. I felt honored to hold the space for such powerful emotions. I was hoping to not only capture the beauty of the area, but also capture the feelings of joy and nostalgia of the experience of her returning there. I loved Emma’s ideas and the props she brought, such as a beloved teddy bear from her childhood. She also brought some sheet music that she wanted in a photo with or laying sheet music on the grass to be photographed with. This photo shoot with Emma and her mother truly moved me. It was such a special place, because Emma felt so happy revisiting such a special place. The photo shoot, in itself, was a new and powerful memory for Emma and her mother. It was such an honor to capture this moment in time of growing up and moving forward and letting go. It was not only a photo shoot. It was a rite of passage and one that I will never forget facilitating for this beautiful family.

Here is a sneak peak of just a few photos from Emma’s day. Thank you, Emma and Jean. I hope the day was just as special for you as it was for me.

If you have a senior who needs their portraits done, contact me to ensure you are put on my fall schedule! Don’t miss this short window of time with the beautiful foliage.
Thank you for reading, Joe

With summer ending and school starting back up, it can mean many things to many people. For teens and their parents, many of them begin the important search for a photographer to  take their senior portraits. Many people see senior portraits as one of the most important photo shoots of their lives. One thing that is so fun about working with the young adults is the interaction with the parents and their children. Many have not had a photo shoot before.  It is great to capture a few photos and show them the back of the cameras LCD screen. I feel it builds confidence for me to show them their photos as we go along in the photo shoot. This past week, I had senior photo shoot. The colors are so vibrant right now, finding a natural and beautiful background is easy. Being in New Hampshire, it is so easy to find amazing locations with water, trees, mountains or some old buildings with cool doors windows and other some what hidden features. I have a chair collection and I brought two of them for this shoot. I had Rylie pose with the brown chair for a few photos in this amazing setting in Conway. The sky was full of crazy clouds and the sun was starting to set. This made for some really nice portraits.

Book your senior portraits now before all the color is gone. The prices for a senior portrait session is $295 and will leave you will 30-40 images on a flash drive.

Gratitude For a Friend at His Wedding | Burlington Vermont Wedding Day Photos

Gratitude For a Friend at His Wedding | Burlington Vermont Wedding Day Photos

Ever weekend or nearly every one this summer I was at a wedding. I saw the happiest of days for many young couples. I was witness to the joining of two families ever few days. It is truly amazing to be part of each and every wedding. Being the photographer the day is spent always on the move and only at small moments here and there do you get the opportunity  to enjoy the bliss the couple and families are part of. Well that was until I had the opportunely to photograph a close friends wedding. Again another young couple and the joining of two families. The wedding was on a Sunday in the beautiful state of Vermont.  From the moment I had heard of the couples engagement I knew I would offer to shoot the wedding as my gift to the couple.
After returning home form a wedding the night before this weeing. I did what I always do on a multi wedding weekend. I transfered files from the SD cards. I charged batteries and gave my gear a quick whip down and made sure it was all in the bag before I headed of to bed.

The days was a beautiful fall early fall day. Crisp air and hot sun all in one. As I left my home and traveled the 160 miles I was taken up and over some great vistas and passes that took me over mountings and over rivers. As I neared the half way point and maybe what was the highest elevation on the trip. The clouds were closing in and I was looking for rain to hit my wind shield at any moment. It never did rain. I decided the other side of the valley and as I came down the clouds tined out the the amazing weather continued right thought the day.  This wedding was at the Town Hall in Shelburne, Vt. It was perfect for the couples vision and fit so well into the wedding ceremony.  The wedding was short and sweet. There was two emotional reads form friends then the couple exchanged their vows and had their kiss and the families became one.

We headed out side for some photos and the hall was a great place for that. The pillars on the front of the building provided a great framing for the family photos. We headed back inside to remove the decorations they had set up and get ready to head off to the reception. I had them pose for a few photos in the hall and as we headed out I had them pose for a great shot outside again using the hall as the backdrop. I really had a great day being at the wedding and being their photographer.

We headed over to the brides families shop. Did i say they make amazing chocolates? Well they do. It was an amazing room. So clean and fresh. The colors were perfect and the size was a great fit for the wedding party and their guests. We ate a great meal. They cut the cake and yes we ate chocolate. They had set out a great selection of  truffles for us to sample and sample we did. Thanks again to Bijou Fine Chocolate for hosting this special day for the couple and off curse your daughter.  Here are a few photos form the hall.

Perfect Weather For An Engagement Session | Engagement Photos In Portsmouth New Hampshire

Perfect Weather For An Engagement Session | Engagement Photos In Portsmouth New Hampshire

After days of being near 90 degrees, it was a nice break to see it in the low 80’s. As a family, we took a road trip down to Portsmouth, NH. We walked around the city a bit, poking our heads in and out of the small shops. We stopped in at Bull Moose Records and looked over their vinyl record collection for trip down memory lane. We found our way back to the car and headed over to Prescott Park for a late afternoon picnic. Prescott Park was the location that the couple and I had decided on to meet for their pre-wedding engagement photos.  I feel that it is almost a necessity to have a photo session before the wedding. It is a great way to not only get to know the couple that you are going to spend 6-8 hours with, but it gets them in front of your camera and removes some of that shy, almost awkward feeling of the start to most photos shoots.  Most young couples have not had photos done, or at least not for a few years, with the last ones being high school senior portraits, in many cases.

Prescott Park was full – I mean very full of people. They had a play, Peter Pan, starting  soon . It was quite a production! I had a few minute to locate the couple and find a quiet spot to chat with them about what we were going to do over the next hour, or so.  First off, I noticed the couple was very comfortable being photographed. He was very happy to pose with her and be funny and open and was willing to pose for as many photos as she wanted. Many times, the groom-to-be isn’t really into being photographed. It was nice that they were both comfortable, positive and fun to be around. It makes my job so much easier!  We moved around of the two gardens. posed for some shots near the trees and the fountains. Then, they did a wardrobe change and we moved to the street for a few poses. We found a brick building in the second garden and that was all it took to finish up this portrait session. It was a great day, with a great couple! I am honored to be their photographer and I am so excited to capture the beauty, joy and excitement on their wedding day!

If you follow my blog, then you know I like to build a slide show after the weddings that I shoot. I love to tell a story of my favorite photos from the special day. Here is a slide show from a wedding that I shot at The Red Barn at Outlook Farm, which is another beautiful Maine wedding venue. It is located in the town of South Berwick, Maine.  On the wedding day, the bride had been stuck in traffic on her way to the wedding and we ended up being a little behind for the start of the reception, so our time for bridal photos was a bit shorter then I would have liked. It was really just all in my head. We got every shot they wanted and still made time to create a few extras of just the bride and groom. So, please enjoy this slide show form Christina & Doug’s May 1st Wedding.

If you are in search of a wedding photographer in Maine or New Hampshire. Please contact me to check on availability. I am booking 2016 weddings already.

Renting Tilt-Shift Lens | Fine Art Photography

Renting Tilt-Shift Lens | Fine Art Photography

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Renting Tilt-Shift Lens

Last year I headed to the coast of Maine for a class. I was able to rent a Tilt-shift lens for my camera. They are an amazing lens. With moving parts that do what it says. It can tilt the angle of view and create an effect with blurring around the edge of the frame of the photo. It gives the viewer the feeling like the photo has been edited in such a way to give this look, but it is all done with the lens. I feel almost any photo could be turned into a fine art photo with the use of this lens. If you are new to photography or want to learn a bit more about what a Tilt- shift lens is check this Wikipedia page.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: This was shot across Camden harbor. I was just playing with the lens and loved the way this looked with the Church steeple in focus and the rest of the city looking blurry and out of focus.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: MY WIFE THIS PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERS DREAM GIRL

Location, location ,location. Like most things in life it is truly about the location. This is true for most business where we live and where we travel too. Lets face it if we live in a place that is not a good fit for our life style then the location is all wrong. Same goes for a business owner. If you own a gas station 100 miles down a old dirt road you wont sell much fuel. As a photographer we are always looking for a shooting location. This place was perfect for some fantasy like photos for me to create. This is one of many of the portraits taken this day. The wild backdrop of the dieing trees. The masked mystery of this beautiful model. The model in this case happed to be my wife.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: I wanted to create some magical looks in this photo shoot. It was not hard with all that was going for me with this set of photos. We had a great scene, great custom and great subject. I took a number of photos in this one set up then we changed it up a bit and took some wider shots with most landscape and the full body shot of the model. In this shot I desaturated it a bit leaving just a bit of color in the red dress and in her brown eyes. The mask has colored beads all over it so I really took the color fro that again to bring focus to her eyes. I like how it turned out. No I love how this photo turned out. We had a fun time working together as we always do.

If you want to create some fantasy portraits or are in need of a more traditional looking family or senior portraits please contact me today. Click here to Call From cell or email me here.

DREAMS COME TRUE IN PUERTO RICO |Travel Photographer Joe Martin

DREAMS COME TRUE IN PUERTO RICO |Travel Photographer Joe Martin

PHOTO OF THE DAY-DREAMS COME TRUE IN PUERTO RICO

Dreams came true all vacation long when in Puerto Rico. One of those dreams was my daughters. This dream turned out to be a photographers dream as well. She always wanted to try paddle boarding. It just so happed that the person we stayed with on this trip had some friends that were big on paddle boarding, so big in fact that they made and sold paddle boards. We were in luck on the day we went to Crash Boat beach. The weather was terrible when we got there. We all were ready to give up and leave when the clouds broke and we had the best beach day ever. Tiffany was in heaven on the board . She picked it up so fast. I am not sure if she fell off once. I on the other hand had a hard time of it. I just could not stand up. I was told after that the boards we had been using were designed for people of a smaller size. Meaning a person my size 6′ 185 lbs needed a longer board to hold them. I was in the water more then on the board. That was fine. I did what I do most time at the beach, took loads of photos.
I took so many photo here birds and waves wide angle with the fish-eye lens and many of the family playing in the water.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: Tiffany was so at home on the board she mad easy look easy. This shot was a bit underexposed do to the sun being behind my subject and blasting me in the camera lens. Once I imported the photos into Lightroom I was off and running. Dropping the shadows even more to give it this silhouette feel. The water was made a bit crisper by upping the clarity a bit. She looks like she is just gliding on the water with ease, and she was.

THE FUNNY BRIDE

THE FUNNY BRIDE

PHOTO OF THE DAY- THE FUNNY BRIDE

It might sound cliché but it is true.  The wedding day is the happiest day in a young couples life. This day was not different I that way. This couple was truly in love he with her and her with him. They had it shining all around them. They both had large families with them on this day and their fun and happiness was contagious and spread over the room when ever they walked in. The bride was the youngest of thirteen children. This means she is the baby with many older siblings crying at every little hug and kiss that the couple made. It was for sure a memorable day for all. One part of the wedding that was most special in my eyes, was that the bride had all her sisters as her brides maids. They all had different color dress which added even more detail to this amazing day.

About this photo: This photo is of the bride and some of her best friends in her life. I believe some of her past school friends and some from work. They posed for a few photos near this great old barn. As I clicked away and they changed the poses they began to make little joke that made them all break out in laughter. Love it when I can capture some true moments in the day. I am always looking for a photo that will make a true memory. If this was my wedding photo I would love it more then the posed portraits. This photo speaks of good times at my wedding.

BOYS WILL BE BOYS |Portrait Session in A Cemetery

BOYS WILL BE BOYS |Portrait Session in A Cemetery

PHOTO OF THE DAY- BOYS WILL BE BOYS

This was one of the funnest, fastest photo shoots I have done. I am not sure if it was because in this photo is my son ans one of his best friends. This photo was taken shortly before Halloween and this was their costumes for the night of candy collection. They both made their own costumes and looked great. Once I saw what they had made I knew we had to do a photo shoot. We live right up the road form a great old cemetery. That was the only place to shoot. I mean it had to be right? So I loaded up my red leather wing backed chair and we headed out.
I used some off camera flash to light them. When you set your camera to be exposed for the sky but light your subject with flash. This is the type of effect you get. This type of photo is why I love photography so much.  I don’t mean the dark scene of the location or even the outfits they made up. I love the lighting in the sky the whole scene looks like a dream. Let me know your thoughts on this one. Have you ever wanted to create a dream like effect in your photos? Lets chat below. Thanks for stopping by my page. If you want to create some portraits like this or something a bit more traditional please contact me today.

REMEMBER IT IS HIS WEDDING TOO

REMEMBER IT IS HIS WEDDING TOO

PHOTO OF THE DAY: REMEMBER IT IS HIS WEDDING TOO

On the days leading up to the wedding and the day of the wedding many treat it as the brides big day. Lets not forget that groom. It is his big day also. He is as happy, full of fear and or butterflies and needs just as much love and support as his bride does.  In some cases he is the sole bread winner. In other cases his job keeps him out of the home or away on business much of his working days. This is limiting to him as far as being able to chose themes or ideas for his wedding. It is good that in a lot of cases with men. We do not care as much about all the fine details of the wedding as our soon to be wife does or will do as the wedding day approaches. He does get support from friends and family and from his bride. Really I don’t need to say much more then lets not forget the groom on his big day.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: Her is a great photo of a groom and his groomsmen. His dad and brothers. What is a better way to celebrate the joining of two families other then to have all the men in you family be in your party.  I had them line up on a deck at the home they were to marry at. We had some laughs and a few jokes back and forth. Then we got done to business and took some photos of them lined up and all facing me. I like to edit in a style that others may not. I like this look it says edgy and vintage all in one. It is not the average photo. This is my style. I know it is not for every one and I am ok with that. If your looking for a wedding photographer and are a little on the fence about my style. Lets talk. Give me a call or shoot me a email and lets find out what it is I can help you with. I can be your problem solver. Contact me today.

WALKING ON WATER

WALKING ON WATER

PHOTO OF THE DAY- WALKING ON WATER

Not sure I need to even say anything about this one. I will just add this is a great little walking trail that starts in a parking lot and climbs this great New Hampshire Peak. This is Willey Pond located in Crawford Notch State Park in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I was on a trip over the Notch this day so I did not hike the trail but will return to capture a photo form the top of this landmark. You can bet that photo of these great pond will be coming form this place soon. Thanks again for check out my page. If you have a comment or just want to say hi. Leave me a comment below.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: Taken from the bridge I set up on the handrail to take a 3 shot braked HDR photo. I made sure I had the reflection lined up to be the same space as the sky was above the mountain top. That is a good tip when capturing a reflection photo. Leave the same space above as below. I wanted the bridge to be a leading line into the photo. SO it makes your eye crawl the photo looking for the next item of interest and drawing you in. Does it make you wonder what is in the woods at the end?

ONE OF MY FAVORITE WEDDING PHOTOS

ONE OF MY FAVORITE WEDDING PHOTOS

PHOTO OF THE DAY: ONE OF MY FAVORITE WEDDING PHOTOS

I thought for todays photo I would post one of my favorite wedding photos. This was form a wedding last year in 2014. The wedding venue was in New Hampshire at a great place named Church Landing at Mill Falls  This waterfront venue is a great in town yet out of the location for any event, not just your wedding. This wedding was held out doors under the big white tent. It was a beautiful day and we had a beautiful couple with family and friends all around. For me weddings are one day of fun with a sprinkling of stressful moments. Will every thing go well? I someone in the wedding party pass out? Will I get all the photos I need without other guests jumping in front of me to grab that epic iPhone photo. Well this wedding went off like more not one issue and fun all around.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: This photo was taken during the ceremony. The Bride & Groom had writing vows that they read aloud to each other. At one point the Bride almost cried but she was able to fight back the emotions and save her makeup. The officiant at this wedding was a friend of the family and tossed a few jokes out making the couple and the guest have a brief laugh. This photo was taken at just the right moment when all had started to laugh. I love the way that she is enjoying her soon to be husbands laugh and viewing of the crowd.I was back a bit away and had zoomed in with my long lens to crop out any distracting elements focusing on the couple and creating a memory of this moment.

T-REX NEST

T-REX NEST

PHOTO OF THE DAY- T-REX NEST

On our trip to Puerto Rico I was able to take many new existing photo of the ocean the jungle and some crazy bugs and animals. Here in this photo at the edge of the jungle might be one of my favorite from the trip. It truly was an amazing sky. It was just after eating dinner I was cleaning up in the kitchen and looked out the window to see the sunset and the purple in it was almost fake looking. I just drop everything then grabbed my gear and ran up the hill to this spot on the conner. There was houses behind me but none on this spot. I stood trying to catch my breath and be fast about setting up my tripod and camera. Once I saw the back of the LCD screen I knew I had something. I moved and composed a few more shots and baam the sun had set.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: IT IS ALL ABOUT THE ACCESSORIES

We here over and over again in movies, TV shows and real life. “It is all about the little things”. This is most important at someones wedding. We as photographers take extra care in creating some special images of the “little things”. I always grab the rings shows and that ever coveted dress for a short walk away from the business of the getting ready space. Here is when I can let some inspiration guide me and make something amazing form the fine details of the day.

In this shot below I placed the rings onto a set of deer antlers that they had in their home. Though the causal on looker my wounder what or why it was done. The couple knows it was part of the backdrop of the perfect day.

Ben & Mae ~ Lake Winnipesaukee Wedding ~ Laconia NH

Ben & Mae ~ Lake Winnipesaukee Wedding ~ Laconia NH

Ben & Mae were married this summer at a beautiful home on Lake Winnipesaukee in Laconia, New Hampshire. Family and friends gathered around the boat dock to witness the joining of these two families in marriage.  The forcast was predicting rain showers for the day and in fact, there were a few sprinkles in the morning. As the ceremony  approached, the clouds closed in and we knew the rain was inevitable. The mother of the groom was prepared and ready with fifty clear umbrellas, just in case.  I brought two of them down to the waters edge and had them ready and waiting. All was great for most of the vows. As they were getting ready to exchange the rings, the sky opened up.  I was lucky that I was on shore and under the cover of the trees for the most part. The brother of the groom grabbed two umbrellas and handed one to the maid of honor and he opened one too. All of a sudden,  it really started coming down.  I was just clicking away on my camera looking for that shot that would not only capture the moment of the wedding, but the beauty of the rain.  I have learned to use what some would think of as problems into advantages. I knew then and there, that if I highlighted the rain, I could capture their day in such a unique and powerful way. In the end, the bride’s words were beautiful. She said,   “It was perfect, and just like I wanted”  If the bride is happy, everyone is happy. To view more images form this wedding follow the link at the bottom.

Southern New Hampshire Weddings at Pats Peak ~Joe Martin

Southern New Hampshire Weddings at Pats Peak ~Joe Martin

What is better than spending a Saturday with my family? I can only think of one thing…. Spending that day creating memories for a family that has just begun. I was in southern New Hampshire in the town of  Henniker, at Pats Peak Ski Resort. I have skied most of New Hampshire’s mountains, but never Pats Peak, so it was an exciting experience to be there. The venue was fabulous and a perfect place to have a wedding and reception in one spot. First, we took the chair lift to the top of the mountain. This is where the joining of the couple took place, on fabric-lined hay bails. The music played beautifully, as the wedding party approached  the  officiant. The couple joined hands as the father of the bride gave his blessing. It was a short, but sweet, ceremony. After the couple was joined as husband and wife,  we had a  mountain top portrait session. The clouds were great and as the night progressed, the sky became a beautiful shade of red, which was the perfect backdrop for some picturesque photos.  I was anxious to post and share this amazing Pats Peak wedding venue. If you’re looking to get married in southern New Hampshire and need your reception venue, check out Pats Peak and tell them Joe sent you.
