BOYS WILL BE BOYS |Portrait Session in A Cemetery

BOYS WILL BE BOYS |Portrait Session in A Cemetery

PHOTO OF THE DAY- BOYS WILL BE BOYS

This was one of the funnest, fastest photo shoots I have done. I am not sure if it was because in this photo is my son ans one of his best friends. This photo was taken shortly before Halloween and this was their costumes for the night of candy collection. They both made their own costumes and looked great. Once I saw what they had made I knew we had to do a photo shoot. We live right up the road form a great old cemetery. That was the only place to shoot. I mean it had to be right? So I loaded up my red leather wing backed chair and we headed out.
I used some off camera flash to light them. When you set your camera to be exposed for the sky but light your subject with flash. This is the type of effect you get. This type of photo is why I love photography so much.  I don’t mean the dark scene of the location or even the outfits they made up. I love the lighting in the sky the whole scene looks like a dream. Let me know your thoughts on this one. Have you ever wanted to create a dream like effect in your photos? Lets chat below. Thanks for stopping by my page. If you want to create some portraits like this or something a bit more traditional please contact me today.

PHOTO OF THE DAY- STANDING IN SHADOWS

There is no better feeling then to reach the top of the summit on a hike. Well but for getting to the top of a hike and seeing this as a view. The true peak of this hill was off to the left of this scene about 50 feet taller then I am standing take this photo. We add set out for a nice easy walk in the woods on my wifes birth day. We had set out for easy, but one we got to far to turn back it was a real hike. Carrying a 3 year old at times as it was to long, steep and just hard for his little legs.  This short hike known as The Boulder Loop Trail that is just a short drive up the Kancamagus highway (RT 112) in Conway, NH was steep and felt much longer then the 3 miles it had stated on Trip Advisor. It was totally worth it. There was boulders the size of houses and cars up the side of this trail and down the other side. It was well marked with a clear trail. No over growth or trees down. If you are looking for a nice family hike with no young children then this might be your next hike.  Happy Birthday Dayna

In Search of The Aurora

In Search of The Aurora

PHOTO OF THE DAY – IN SEARCH OF THE AURORA

In the winter of 2013 was one of the largest solar flairs to date. The week of the sun flair were wild reports of the chance to view the northern lights also called the aurora borealis. I am lucky enough to live in a location were there is a good chance of viewing such an amazing sight.  un-lucky for me it was not in the cards on the nights I had gone out. I spent tow late almost over nights out in the cold not just cold but really cold. At the time I took this photo it was 3 degrees. There must have been 10 or us out just hoping to capture the lights. We started to leave the location around 4 AM and I was soon to follow. I was happy to have this great shot to bring home but was hoping for the color to be there that night. Maybe net time. I took this shot looking away toward the south as the sky looked amazing. It is hard to see this at night, but the trick is to take a long exposure photo and then look at it on the back of the cameras LCD screen. I hope to some day be able to view and photograph the lights. It was for sure existing to be there with all so hoping to see them. Better luck next time.

Dirty Beach is the name of this beautiful location. Yup you guessed it in Puerto Rico. This is the spot to come to if you travel to PR. The name Dirty Beach was giving to this spot because the tide drags a large amount of seed weed up on the shore line.  The locals gave it its name so the tourists would steer clear the true name of this dream location is La Playuela. It must work as there was almost no one there on the two days we went. I was in photography heaven. You can not see it from here but on the end of that point directly in the middle of the photo there is a natural rock arch. I did walk around the beach and into the arch. The photo of the arch can be seen here. Thanks so much for visiting my page. A big thanks to all that shared or like my photos. Please leave a comment below I love to hear form you guys.

CONNECTING BEFORE THE WEDDING

CONNECTING BEFORE THE WEDDING

PHOTO OF THE DAY – CONNECTING BEFORE THE WEDDING

On most wedding days every one is very stressed, rushing around. Most time the day is a blur. It starts early and ends late with many hugs kisses and tears in between. On this wedding day. I showed up a bit early as I always do. I find in order to start on time and make great photos it helps to show up early and take time to triple check my gear and walk the property a bit. The couple this day did not do a first look. They chose to be together before the wedding. As they got ready and I took photos we all just hung out and have a fun pre-wedding time together. I took her dress, shoes and the rings out of the room and shot them as I always do. Once the detail photos were done I returned to the room and continued to take photos of then getting ready. As the bride was in the other room getting in her dress I stayed with the groom and the family members that were there. I was able to talk and connect with the members of the bridal party as I do at most weddings. Only it takes a little longer into the day to truly get to know folks to this level as I was only with them all waiting for the ceremony to state.
About this photo. I was seated in a chair opposite from the groom and there little girl. I was able to see down the hall way that the bride was going to be walking back out to the room we were in. i saw her coming and quickly turned my camera on the groom and the little one. They were so together drawing together that they did not notice she had entered the room. It was this few words that made this photo possible. I said “Look moms got her dress on” the rest speaks for it self.

ABANDON PLACES

ABANDON PLACES

PHOTO OF THE DAY: ABANDON PLACES

On my trip to southern New Hampshire for a photo shoot last year. After I took the photo of the river I headed over to the boys YDC institution. I had heard there was some empty abandon buildings there. One of the buildings. The one pictured below was rumored to be hunted. It was boarded up so I could not see the inside so I set up and captured a few photos of its exterior. I liked the way this looked in black & white. Hope you like it too.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE ACCESSORIES

PHOTO OF THE DAY: IT IS ALL ABOUT THE ACCESSORIES

We here over and over again in movies, TV shows and real life. “It is all about the little things”. This is most important at someones wedding. We as photographers take extra care in creating some special images of the “little things”. I always grab the rings shows and that ever coveted dress for a short walk away from the business of the getting ready space. Here is when I can let some inspiration guide me and make something amazing form the fine details of the day.

In this shot below I placed the rings onto a set of deer antlers that they had in their home. Though the causal on looker my wounder what or why it was done. The couple knows it was part of the backdrop of the perfect day.

What to do on a cold winters night? Head on out in to the cold tripod in hand. I set up for this shot but soon noticed the photo would be so much more if I was to turn on the lights inside. I love this photo and that we can see the smoke coming from the chimney really give it the feel of the cold that night.

Days Gone Past

Photo of the day : Days Gone Past

On the way home form a family photo shoot I turned off at exit 6 in to the town Manchester. I knew a bit about the town and had been there in the past. I was just looking to grab a few shots of the river and the old brick mill buildings in the fall before heading home. Well from one of the bridges I was able to capture this photo of some of the old mills now turned in to office and apartment buildings. This buildings were built in the very early 1800’s

I Love how the river is sweeping around to reveal the bridge and other buildings on the opposite side of the river. With just a hint of color in the trees letting you know it is early fall in New Hampshire.

Do you love the ocean? I like a lot of people do. My family takes at least one trip to the ocean every summer. This was one of those lucky shots. As the day was coming to an end and the clouds were closing in I was hoping for a few more shots of this once a year trip. As I was looking around I saw this great bird flying in my direction I pulled up and snap it.

In 2013 I headed to the great state of Maine to take part in a portrait lighting class at Maine Media Workshops. It was a great way for me to expand my portrait and wedding photographer skills. During the class I was able to escape off to the coast from class and create some personal work. This is one of my favorites from that week. The ocean was just so smooth the reflection was just asking for it to be made into a photo.   Once I had the image and I did my editing work. I printed 2 large prints and returned to the spot to hand deliver a image each to the captain of this great vessels.

Lakeside Wedding at Church Landing at Mill Falls | Meredith NH | Tracy & Brendan

Lakeside Wedding at Church Landing at Mill Falls | Meredith NH | Tracy & Brendan

With a backdrop like Lake Winnipesaukee in the fall, what more would you need for your wedding? Church Landing at Mill Falls has that extra bit you are looking for. After arriving early we set up and do a few pre-wedding photos with the guys.  With the wedding ceremony about to begin, I took up a spot to get the bridal party as they came from the hotel and down onto the lawn. As Brendan waited, one by one, the girls walked solo with out a groomsmen to the alter.  The vows were written by the bride and groom as they read the vows. Tracy, the bride, was holding back tears the best she could, only letting a few pass by, but not enough to mess up her makeup.

Once the kiss had been shared and the party walked out in the final procession, we took time to create the family portraits and wedding party photos. As the families took turns posing the bridle party was sharing some appetizers set up on a special table so they did not miss out on the cocktail hour. I could tell that Tracy & Brendan were made for each other. They almost never left each others side the whole wedding and had that connection when they talked or shared a smile. Young and in love was the theme of the day.

All of the photos were coming out great as we raced the setting sun. In the fall, moving fast in the early evening is a must if you want great outdoor shots. We did well with our time and moved inside for the rest of the night. After the dance and cake cutting, we returned to the lakeside for a last few shots of the bride and groom in the gazebo on the docks.

This was my last wedding for 2014 and what a way to end the wedding season. The season is short for weddings in New Hampshire. With only so many weeksends in a year, make sure you contact me early  in your wedding planing if you want me as your wedding photographer. 2015 is underway and already booking up fast. Ben & Mae ~ Lake Winnipesaukee Wedding ~ Laconia NH

Ben & Mae ~ Lake Winnipesaukee Wedding ~ Laconia NH

Ben & Mae were married this summer at a beautiful home on Lake Winnipesaukee in Laconia, New Hampshire. Family and friends gathered around the boat dock to witness the joining of these two families in marriage.  The forcast was predicting rain showers for the day and in fact, there were a few sprinkles in the morning. As the ceremony  approached, the clouds closed in and we knew the rain was inevitable. The mother of the groom was prepared and ready with fifty clear umbrellas, just in case.  I brought two of them down to the waters edge and had them ready and waiting. All was great for most of the vows. As they were getting ready to exchange the rings, the sky opened up.  I was lucky that I was on shore and under the cover of the trees for the most part. The brother of the groom grabbed two umbrellas and handed one to the maid of honor and he opened one too. All of a sudden,  it really started coming down.  I was just clicking away on my camera looking for that shot that would not only capture the moment of the wedding, but the beauty of the rain.  I have learned to use what some would think of as problems into advantages. I knew then and there, that if I highlighted the rain, I could capture their day in such a unique and powerful way. In the end, the bride’s words were beautiful. She said,   “It was perfect, and just like I wanted”  If the bride is happy, everyone is happy. To view more images form this wedding follow the link at the bottom.

Social Media Slide Show from a Southern New Hampshire Wedding.

Social Media Slide Show from a Southern New Hampshire Wedding.

This year, I have been a second shooter for a few photographers. When you have two photographers, you get all the extra shots you might miss with only one.  This slide show is from a wedding that I photographed with another New Hampshire wedding photographer, called Exposes the Moment.  All the photos in this slide show I shot and edited to create a storyboard of the day. The first part of the day I was with the groomsmen, and that is why there are not many photos from the bride getting ready. I was able to take a few photos of her when I photographed the rings. If you notice, near the start at about the 21 second mark, there is a photo of the bride putting on her lipstick, with her dads reflection in the background.

There is 141 one photos in this video, even though I took many more I used what I felt the was a good amount to show a story of the day. One of my favorite photos in this slide show is near the end at the 3:31 time stamp, during the father daughter dance. The time of the wedding when the bride dances with her daddy. As she danced I noticed that her niece (the flower girl) was sitting in her own fathers lap and had her head resting on his shoulder. He is in the military and will be heading over seas again soon. She was sad to be reminded of his departing. Even with all the great shots form the wedding like the chair lift or on top of Pats Peak even the sunset photo with the bride and groom, this is the one I just loved capturing. The two fathers and daughters in a special  moment.  I have added that photo lower in the post.

Congratulations to the bride and groom, with many more years to come. This is the same type of slide show that is offered with my “Platinum wedding package and that  is included as a add on in my social media package.

Please contact me today to save the date for your 2015 wedding. PLease comment below if you like my work or share this post with a soon to be bride in the New Hampshire area. Thanks so much

Southern New Hampshire Weddings at Pats Peak ~Joe Martin

Southern New Hampshire Weddings at Pats Peak ~Joe Martin

What is better than spending a Saturday with my family? I can only think of one thing…. Spending that day creating memories for a family that has just begun. I was in southern New Hampshire in the town of  Henniker, at Pats Peak Ski Resort. I have skied most of New Hampshire’s mountains, but never Pats Peak, so it was an exciting experience to be there. The venue was fabulous and a perfect place to have a wedding and reception in one spot. First, we took the chair lift to the top of the mountain. This is where the joining of the couple took place, on fabric-lined hay bails. The music played beautifully, as the wedding party approached  the  officiant. The couple joined hands as the father of the bride gave his blessing. It was a short, but sweet, ceremony. After the couple was joined as husband and wife,  we had a  mountain top portrait session. The clouds were great and as the night progressed, the sky became a beautiful shade of red, which was the perfect backdrop for some picturesque photos.  I was anxious to post and share this amazing Pats Peak wedding venue. If you’re looking to get married in southern New Hampshire and need your reception venue, check out Pats Peak and tell them Joe sent you. Southern New Hampshire Summer Wedding ~ Tom & Emily

Southern New Hampshire Summer Wedding ~ Tom & Emily

I had the pleasure of being a second-shooter at beautiful early summer wedding yesterday.  The wedding was held at the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, in the town of Contoocook, just outside of Concord, New Hampshire . I wanted to share a few of my favorite photos from the day with you. It was great to be a second shooter for a wedding. Second-shooters have less stress, shorter days and still enjoy the excitement of the event itself. I take any wedding job as a very special and serious procedure. I use the word “procedure” as it is so much more then a simple photo session. Things can happen in the blink of an eye that you have to capture. Taking so many photos, knowing you’ve got plenty of gold, but really hoping to get that shot that will stay in my portfolio for years to come and at the same time make a portrait the clients will love.
This was a great day and not only did I get to enjoy someone’s happiest day. I met a great photographer. Even though I am in New Hampshire and the wedding was in New Hampshire, Autumn Wells of  Autumn Bliss Photography is a Sanford, Maine based wedding and portrait photographer.  Her laid back, easy going energy fit nicely with mine and I hope to work together again some day.

If you like my work and are getting married or know someone that is, please consider working with me as your wedding photographer.
