We Heart Travel | Natural Landscape Photos

We Heart Travel | Natural Landscape Photos

PHOTO OF THE DAY- Travel who does not like to go on vacation? I don’t know of anyone that does not like to have some down time. At times the trip can be stressful can be unpredictable. Once at your destination all is well.  One of our best family trips was our trip to Purtio Rico. As a family we had so much fun together. Playing in the ocean seeing new landscapes so much different then our native New Hampshire. We say new animals, new foods and created new memories that will surely last a life time. One of the firsts days we were there we went to the beach. It was amazing. The water was so warm. The kids and I rain and dove in. We ate lunch and we had to hide from the rain. It rained hard that first day. So hard that some of the smaller roads on the way back to or home away from home were flooded and we had to find an alternate route back. Our host that put us up the time we spent in Purtio Rico drove us to many beaches when there. She took us on a day trip many hours form her home. We all boarded a small boat and then were dropped off on a small island. One the island there was much to see and much to photograph. One of the small beaches there had many tiny pieces of coral. It even had some huge pieces. Here is one of them.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: I  was out exploring a bit shooting up the landscape. Taking photos from every angle from low and close to the water and far back in the tree line. The clouds screamed epic from every angle. One of the coolest things I found on the island was this huge piece of coral. At least I think it was. It might have been a rock with many holes in it. I think it was coral.  It was in the shape of a hart. It was magical. I stood it up so the heart would stand out ageist the blue sky and the green of the mountains. It is what we LOVE about travel.

PHOTOS FROM THE RUNWAY

PHOTOS FROM THE RUNWAY

PHOTO OF THE DAY: PHOTOS FROM THE RUNWAY

Again we as a family were on a plane traveling once again back home from a trip. This time we were in Dallas, TX after a 5 day trip to a home schooling conference that my wife was speaking at. I was in the middle seat talking to the kids about the trip we just took and the trip we are about to take home. I know that some of the kids are fine to fly and a couple of them do not like it so much. As we sit and wait for the plane in front of us to take flight I am looking for a spot to take a cool photo. The plane turns just slightly and in doing so gives me a great view of the city. I snap a few and wait then a few more.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: I selected this photo from the group of shots I had for the one thing they others did not have. That other plane in it. I had not noticed until after I imported the photos on to my computer. This was the only photo that had a plane in it. I think it completes the story of our location. I mean you can tell it is an airport runway as it. With the plane it just says group level. I gave this photo that texture to add a kind of vintage look and feel to the photograph. I think it gives it a mood a time stamp. to me it looks to be a photo from maybe the 1970’s shot on film. I was happy with how it turned out. How do you feel when you look at it. Does it scream vintage to you also?

I am in the processes of adding my portfolio to my on line print shop. The site is hosted on another site called Smugmug. They offer many styles of prints from 8″x10″ photo paper up to 24″x36″ canvas wraps. I have a print on canvas option also that can print any whole image on the front face of a canvas wrap and print the wrapped edge black. This way you are getting the whole image in the face of the print and not losing any on the wrapped edges.

If you click this image you will be taken to my print shop and may view other images there. I have only a small percent of my work there now.

EARTH VIEW

EARTH VIEW

PHOTO OF THE DAY: EARTH VIEW

If you have been following me for a bit then you know I loved Puerto Rico and my camera did too. This is one of the first shots from Puerto Rico even know we had not even landed yet. The angle on this photo is so cool as it shows the depth of the city, almost like the Earth View on Google maps. You can see them in a 3D like style. It is like a tiny Lego city with the light hitting it all just right. This is was the light can do to a photo. With it being side lite like it is. It shows the depth. If the sun had been more over head and beaming straight down onto the city this would look flat non life like. It would give a totally deferent feel and mood then what we have now.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: As we came in for our landing I pulled my camera out and started to look for something to shoot. We were still over water so I had to wait for a bit and then there is was Puerto Rico. I was surprised to see the city right up to the coast. Being a new traveler to Puerto Rico I was thinking the costs would be all beach and jungle. Proves we should not always assume what we think about a place is true, but that we should investigate it to know as much as we can about a person, place or thing. I edited this photo in Lightrooom as I always do. I never us Photoshop. I truly do like to use it. I like a quick edit of my work and lightroom does that for me.

FROSTED OVER TOWN

FROSTED OVER TOWN

PHOTO OF THE DAY- FROSTED OVER TOWN

We have long winters here in New Hampshire. I joke that we have 5 seasons. Spring, summer, fall, winter and wedding session. Not necessarily in that order. When wedding season does start it goes fast unlike some of the last few winters we have had. Again my camera is almost always with me in the car. I happen to drive around the park in down town North Conway and the scene was just asking to be photographed. I jumped out and took about five photos. This being the one I picked to edit and post. We can see a large part of our old fashion ski town.

Sure we have a Starbucks a 99 restaurant and Walmart. They are down at the other end of town in the area of town that contains most of the change type of stores and outlets. This is the older side of town the part that still holds on to some of the original buildings that were part of the foundation of Mount Washington Valley. It is great to park on the street near here and walk in and out of these store fronts. Each store is unique in its own way. From our famous rock and gem shop “Dondero’s Rock Shop” and our local small town coffee shop “The Met” then a bit further down we have Horsefeathers restaurant and right next door in “Zeb’s County Store”. On a small side note. I had worked at Horesfeathers for 16 years before children and have gone back to work there over time the past few years after taken 8 years old to grow my wooden toys business Willow Toys . Zeb’s is the yellow building pictured here just left of the church and Horesfeathers is the lite blue building two buildings over to the left of Zeb’s. If you ever find your self up this way both locations are a must visit type of place. Finally we can see “Cranmore Mountain” our local in town ski resort.

Thanks for viewing my site. Have you ever been to North Conway? Let me know in the comments below.

SHOOTING UP THE STREETS IN NEW YORK CITY | STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

SHOOTING UP THE STREETS IN NEW YORK CITY | STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTO(s) OF THE DAY: SHOOTING UP THE STREETS IN #NYC

I felt I could not just post one “Photo of the Day” for this post. For the reasons of story telling I felt only one photo would not tell a story. I could have dragged this out in to 10 blog posts. I di dnot want to wait to share my trip to #NYC. We had gone to New York for a few reasons. One was to see some family friends another was to see the city. we had other plans when there. We had made gift bags for some homeless people in the city. We built 15 bags with assorted helpful items in them. They were a way to create a feeling of gratitude and kindness to a few folks that had been dealt a tough hand in life. We had also picked up some winter fleece jackets. We filmed a bit of these “Acts of Kindness” for our vlogs on Youtube. (the video is below the photos)
The day we headed into the city is was cold, in fact so cold that it was tough to find a location that had many homeless folks. They were mostly down in Penn Station. It was so great to gift these bags to folks. They were all so full of thanks. A few were almost brought to tears.  For now I will get back to the point of this post this set of street photographs.  As we walked the city we went in some gift shops had some coffee at Starbucks. Saw the Naked Cowboy. We stopped in Times Square and sat for a bit. All the time taking small video clips for out vlog and taking photo of the city and the people that were all about. From the folks in times square dress as random yet popular TV and movie characters. We saw Batman, Elmo, Micky Mouse and a number of cool yet creepy very tall people dressed up as the Statue of Liberty. There was ten of us together so taking my time to get all the photos I would have was a bit hard. I still was about to capture some what I would say are creative and captivated of the New York city life. I hope you enjoy these photos I have picked to share. Pleae leave a comment if you have any feedback. Have you been to NYC did you get some of these same types of photos? Thanks again for stopping by.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “SKY HIGH” – A view up. This photo made this set as I love the point of view I created. I love the reflection and the tones made in Lightroom once editing took place.

looking up at reflecting windows of many skyscrapers in new york city

Loved this POV looking up at some sky scrappers in #NYC

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “Gotham Nights”  – I do not use Photoshop. I just never learned it. I do love Lightroom. Lightroom is another Adobe product if is very powerful photo edting software. It does all the basics and more. This photo of Radio City Music Hall and the building across from it really shows what Lightroom can do. This feels like it is out of a Batman movie to me. You can see from the street sign that it is the holiday season.

city scap photo from NYC many building and the Radio City MusicHall marquee

Is that Gotham City? Looks like this is cut form a movie.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “Batman vs Elmo” I think we know who would win that battle. Even know this is a little blurry from the motion and maybe me freezing to death. I had to include it as it shows the true street level view of what it is like in Times Square.

Street photo of street actors Batman is in view n NYC

Batman, Elmo and Minnie oh my.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “Walking Heads”  This moment stopped in time is a great expression of what walking around was like. At times we had crowds all around us. I love that the crossing sign is on the STOP. Also you can see one of the people dressed up as The Statue of Liberty.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “Night Lights” Taking with a wide angle fish-eye lens using a long exposure. The cars moving past add a streak of light form the motion. The wide fish-eye lens give this a surreal look bending the tall buildings at the top.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “Get Me Out Of Here” From the street looking up using my wide fish-eye lens to create this effect. You can really see the scope of the center of this part of New York City. Love this effect for this type of location.

Get me out of here.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “Then This Guy” Loved this one. I was crossing the street with the family. I looked up and saw this man on his bike at the red light. I loved his mask and the look on his face. He was looking right at me as I stopped for one second and snapped it. The photo really captured the city as well. The cars the buildings. We can see the time of year with his mask and the holiday lights.

Then this guy was just there. Love his hat/face mask

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: “Hot And Cold Windows” This is crazy. It was so clod that the top windows of One World Plaza. I zoomed in for this one and captured the steam rising from the top of the building do to the cold air this night.

In Search of The Aurora

In Search of The Aurora

PHOTO OF THE DAY – IN SEARCH OF THE AURORA

In the winter of 2013 was one of the largest solar flairs to date. The week of the sun flair were wild reports of the chance to view the northern lights also called the aurora borealis. I am lucky enough to live in a location were there is a good chance of viewing such an amazing sight.  un-lucky for me it was not in the cards on the nights I had gone out. I spent tow late almost over nights out in the cold not just cold but really cold. At the time I took this photo it was 3 degrees. There must have been 10 or us out just hoping to capture the lights. We started to leave the location around 4 AM and I was soon to follow. I was happy to have this great shot to bring home but was hoping for the color to be there that night. Maybe net time. I took this shot looking away toward the south as the sky looked amazing. It is hard to see this at night, but the trick is to take a long exposure photo and then look at it on the back of the cameras LCD screen. I hope to some day be able to view and photograph the lights. It was for sure existing to be there with all so hoping to see them. Better luck next time.

PHOTO OF THE DAY : SKY and SEA, WATER and TREE

Dirty Beach is the name of this beautiful location. Yup you guessed it in Puerto Rico. This is the spot to come to if you travel to PR. The name Dirty Beach was giving to this spot because the tide drags a large amount of seed weed up on the shore line.  The locals gave it its name so the tourists would steer clear the true name of this dream location is La Playuela. It must work as there was almost no one there on the two days we went. I was in photography heaven. You can not see it from here but on the end of that point directly in the middle of the photo there is a natural rock arch. I did walk around the beach and into the arch. The photo of the arch can be seen here. Thanks so much for visiting my page. A big thanks to all that shared or like my photos. Please leave a comment below I love to hear form you guys.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: UPSIDE DOWN MOUNTAIN

Meet Mt. Chocorua. It is right down the street from our home in New Hampshire. It is one of he most photographed locations in New Hampshire. I think you can see why once you see it. This was in early fall and the lake was giving the best reflection. I shot many photos this day and will post more over the next few weeks. The bridge in the center of this photo is a great spot with one more small lake to grab a reflection of the mountain on.

The sky and the water really make this photo what it is.

Flashback to Puerto Rico ~ With Fine Art Photography

Flashback to Puerto Rico ~ With Fine Art Photography

Finding a lot gem is one of the best parts of working in fine art photography. With so many photos in my catalog and the amount that get added each month it is hard to keep up. Some days I will go back into older folders and select a portrait session or a vacation our family took. I then go into my post photo working mind set and begin to cull out the bad shots and mark some of the keepers to edit. Here or just two prints I have discovered this past week. The are both created using my Canon 60D set on a tripod. I then used my bracketing exposure setting to capture three photos of these scenes all set to be two exposures higher then the first. This way you get all the dynamic range in the field of view.  The photos start off in Lightroom and our exported to Photomatix. A popular HDR software. With just a few slider adjustments I am read to save and then bring them back into Lightroom for the few final adjustments. Have you ever wanted to add some art to your home or office? Maybe I have some fine art photos for your walls. Click one of the photos below or follow this link to my online print shop.

Twitter and Facebook and Pinterest Oh My

Twitter and Facebook and Pinterest Oh My

Image of some popular social media logos

“Did you forget your password? Click here to reset.” How many times have you seen this message under the log in field on a webpage? I know for me it has been once too many. With so many social sites these days, we really need to pick which ones work best for us. Better yet, which ones work with us. I know some people love Twitter. Others vote for Facebook. The internet has long been a social media wormhole. In the beginning, it may have direct email was the first “social media.”

Is One Social Media Site Enough These Days?

We need to chose our social media experience wisely and not get spread so thin that we are like butter on warm toast that can not be seen at all. You should first ask yourself “what is it I am I trying to get out of this interaction?” Am I a consumer or a product? Am I a user or a provider? This question can change the way you view social sites and in turn can change the way that people and these sites view you. For me, as a landscape and portrait photographer, I find that one of the best ways to get the most eyes on my photos and website is through the use of multiple sites throughout the day. I find that Twitter is a late night experience, while Facebook is more active in late afternoon and evening. That leaves the morning hours empty, and in that space, I feel that Pinterest fills bill! If you have not made your way over to the site yet, you should give it a look. Over 70 million people use Pinterest and that number is growing.

On Pinterest, you are able to select what you see and how you view it. It is a place to “pin” your favorite pictures of things you may want to order in the future. It is also a place to get ideas for a craft or DIY project. You can set up different boards by name or in categories. You can then get out on the web and add pins to your boards, saving them for later or to share with your Pinterest following, which makes it social. You can use the search field on Pinterest to search for things also. Then, once found you may “re-pin” them to one of your own boards. That is Pinterests way of being social. For me, I use it to share wedding dress styles or portrait poses. I added camera gear to one of my boards and later went back to fantasize about adding it to my camera bag someday. I also add my fine art landscape work directly from my print site. I might share a wedding or family photo from a portrait session and have that photo link back to my site to help drive traffic or a new client to my store-front.

Remember that you can pin anything and everything that can be found on the web. From a home for sale, to a baby teething-ring. Dream cars or photos of cats – we can always use a few more cat photos in our life, right?!
One cool feature that I appeciate is being able to chose a style or color that you love too! If you’re thinking of landscaping your yard, you can load up some photos of backyard patios or decks. Most of the pictures have links to the websites that they originated from, so you can click and learn more.

What Will Pinterest Do For My Portrait Business?

Now, you might say, “Well, how does this help me in a small, local business? First off, there is a few ways to pin some thing. You have the option to share from your website. You can paste a url into the field option. Then, you will be asked to select the picture on that page that you wish to share. Finally, you will have a space to add information about this item or page. When you share a pin that is from your site or your town you have a few options and you should use them all. You should talk about your services and location. If you’re having a sale, post the new prices and maybe the date that the sale ends. The more information you can add, the better chance you have of coming up in a search. There is no need for #hashtags. You will want to post content that has keywords and phrases that will have your type of business showing up in a search. I am sure there are sites that will give tips and tricks to getting found better, as well if you do a little digging. I know for this small-town-New Hampshire-photographer, it has been a great place to view projects and vacation destinations all over the world. I have enjoyed sharing my work at Pinterest and also viewing other photographers work. It has been nice to add one more cog in the wheel of my presence in the World-Wide-Web!

Thank you for stopping by! I love your comments, so please give me feedback if you are inspired to do so. Also, if you want to subscribe to my blog to receive email updates when I post a new entry, please leave a comment below and check the second option to be notified via email.

Happy Pinning! Joe

What is a Photographer to Blog about?

What is a Photographer to Blog about?

Beautiful landscape print of a snowy rivers in New Hampshire

Snowing River in New Hampshire

Sure, I could blog about camera gear or my last family photo shoot. I want to offer more then pretty pictures or one family’s story. Plus there will always be that type of blog here and there. I want to be a bit different. I don’t want to give you what ever other photographer gives you. I want to share some of my experiences sure, but I am so much more than that.

Like most people I sit and think about a new blog post. After some time I would find a photo, write a one line back story about the photo and post. Well, that is not a post. In fact, it is almost nothing. It will not get me a better Google ranking. Google looks for new information within a page that contains between 300-2000 words or more. If you’re like me, once you get to a page and see that it has an overwhelming amount of text you do one of two things: You either close the page or you might scroll and scan the page for small lines of text that grab your eye, taking in just a small amount of the carefully crafted post. We all like to share our story to give tips, updates, a news story or better yet, show you what we had for lunch that day.

I want to keep you supplied with a post that is short and sweet, to the point and informational at the same time.  With every post I get a little clearer on what I would like to share and why I want to share it. At the same time, I am trying to become a better writer and better at typing. It is hard to type fast when you spend most of your time backspacing to remove that red line under your words. As I became more comfortable, more blog posts start forming in my head I have to start to write ideas in my phones’ notes and draft emails to myself.

Now what I am blogging about these days? Well, now that is it off season for outdoor photography in my area. At this point this it my only studio space. I am blogging about photography, about my business, and blog about a few product reviews on items I have bought this winter, just to fill in the slow shooting times with some content so Google does not forget about me.

As we close in on portrait and wedding session I will blog about shoots and post photos from them. At the same time, keeping true to my passion to share some knowledge along the way that I have picked up from others or as I try new things by pushing myself in new directions.

One thing to think about and understand is that we live in a ever-changing word. A world that did not have the iPad prior to 2010. A world where most everyone has a Smart Phone, even young children. We live in a world that camera phones are better then the high price digital cameras we lugged around a few years back. What’s next? We barely know what is happening now! One thing that we must adapt to is the fast-changing times and new ways to content with our clients to bring in new business. One thing that is in the now and we have to use to our advantage is the actual Smart Phones. We have to have our sites mobile ready to be view and navigate with ease. What I mean is with the iPhones, Siri and Google’s “search by voice” feature. We need to be ready and able to come up in a search by location and the field of work that we specialize in. Are you ready? Do you even know how to adjust your business to handle this in the best way? I may blog about it in the future once I have a better understanding on how we as photographers can benefit from this new way of internet search algorithms.

In closing, remember that everyone needs to add content to their site. You must blog to be found. Shoot & Burn Vs High Quality Portrait Printing. What is the right way to do Business?

Why do I offer prints for your portraits and not just a CD?

Why not just toss everything on a CD and let me print what I want, when I want? The short answer is, we do offer the CD for sale after you have already purchased a print package for wedding photography valued at $750.00 or more. Now the reasons behind this option.
My personal answer to this question is a bit longer and may give you some insight as to why we value prints so much more then just a CD. First off, we want you to not only value your session, we want you to enjoy the session for years to come, getting more out of it than you have put in. We know the CD seems to be the best value at first, but walking out of the ordering session knowing that prints are on the way to you is so much more rewarding then holding a CD full of images you may or may not ever print. In fact, many people take the CD home, toss it on the desk and might come back to it in a few days or weeks and start to put them on their computer. A small percentage of people will, in fact, take the CD to a printer, though in most cases it is a Walmart print center or other user-interfaced print service that offers cheap printing. We know that it sound like this would be easy to do, but consider the following.
Some of the issues you will run into with this method are that you will still need to buy frames, matting, and mounting products and many of your portraits will not be cropped in a way that enhances the portrait. This type of print center will print straight from the CD, which will add extra work on your end. In addition, they may remove aspects from your portraits that we, as photographers, have included to make them creative and stylish. You will also have to select the right print finish such as glossy, luster or matte. Do you know the difference between this products? Don’t worry, most people do not. Another issue that you may run into is the size limit that these labs will offer. Our professional print lab can create beautifully framed wall art that is available in sizes ranging from 8×10 prints all the way up to a 20×34 printed canvas and everything in between. These are available in many styles to fit any decor and every budget.

You just booked a session with a photographer after many hours of research, so let’s support each other in this final process of the ordering session. Let us help you select sizes that match the area of the home you’re planing to display them. Let us help guide you to a product that will last for many years after your Walmart print has faded or the frame has fallen apart. Remember, we are offering top of the line products supplied by a professional print lab. After a lot of research we find that most people will never even print the portraits or display them after the photo shoot. In fact, the ones that do only print a few and only display them for a short time, as they are often not framed or being displayed in a way that they should be. There is nothing like looking at your beautiful home in a new way with your beautiful portraits proudly hanging for all to see. Lets face it, we all love to hear we are beautiful and loved. Think how it will feel when friends and family see and comment on your new beautiful portraits.

We know there is an investment involved with your print order and we respect that and understand that everyone is at a different place in their ability to purchase prints. If you are going to buy prints, why not get them from your photographer? They use the best labs and will guide you to help create the look and feel you are after. Let’s look at this from a few different ways. You have already shown support to the photographer by way of hiring them for their services for the portrait session, so why not show them support again when it comes to printing your portraits? You are going to have to pay someone to print them, right? Using your photographer’s skills and knowledge can make this enjoyable and rewarding for everyone and can save you time and money. You would not walk into a car dealership ask for the cheapest car on the lot and take the one that needed all kinds of expensive work after leaving the lot, over the car that is ready to drive across the country from the first time you turned the key. In a sense that is what you are doing when you’re using a photographer that does a shoot and burn session. They are taken the photos and burning them to a CD and handing the rest of the transaction to you for you to deal with on your own. We want to give you the attention your deserve from first contact to our last meeting.

Now, I will tell you I used to do just that; I would take the time to book your session, finding a time and place that meets both of our needs, then create some beautiful portraits of you or your family for whatever event it was intended, from wedding, family or senior portraits. Then I would edit the files, burn them to disk and hand them off, not really giving a second thought of what was to be done after that. Now, after years of being a photographer, and seeing the great innovations and products that have come out in the recent past, I understand how important it is to offer a total portrait experience to my clients. This is the way I wish I had done it from the start.

Some photographers think this shoot and burn type of business is giving the industry a bad name. In some ways it is. It is like the quick oil change businesses that are popping up in every town nowadays. They offer a quick, affordable way of getting your vehicle’s oil changed. If you look at it the same way as the print vs shoot and burn method of making portraits, there are a lot of the same things happening. You get a fast and cheap oil change, but the oil they use is much like the paper they use at a Walmart type of print center; it is cheap and fades quickly, in turn making you have to change your oil more frequently. And it does not treat your vehicle with the respect it needs to run the way it was designed to. With these oil services, the person working there is not trained in a way to notice, or offer to fix or repair, any other issues your car my have at the time of service. Now, if you take your car to a trained professional that knows more about cars then just about its oil, you will not only be treated better as a client, but you will receive better service, and in most cases, have more options and suggestions to help you make quality decisions about your vehicle. In short, we all need a professional in whatever field we are dealing with. Another way to think of it is like a Super-Cuts hair salon (if you can call it that). You pay ten dollars for a hair cut. With a price like that are these hair cuts adding to your style? Is this a place you would use to prepare for your wedding day portraits? I don’t think many would make that choice.

One thing I have not touched on is the images on the CD. Let’s remember that we are running a business. That business is to offer our clients the best products and service that we can. Then why offer this CD at all and why must we have a print order in place prior to the purchase the images on CD? We only offer the CD after a commitment of a print order has been place for a few reasons. We need to cover all the costs of running the business and part of the way we cover the costs is through the sale of fine art prints. The session fees that are paid prior cover just a small percent of the costs associated with running a successful photography business. Some people might say that offering the cheaper option of a shoot and burn vs a print sale is the difference between a “real” professional photographer and someone that is more of a hobbyist. I will leave that up to the client to decide. I will say I have heard that the people who offer prints, and the people who buy prints, take a special pride in the work that has been created.

Lets face it, we all like nice things. We spend money on things like good wholesome foods. Some people will eat at McDonalds and be satisfied with that, while others will only eat at the best restaurant in town. I would much rather have the service and quality of food that comes from the full service restaurant than settle for eating food of sub-par quality in my car .

Next time you’re looking to have your family’s portraits done, please remember to put the skills of your photographer to work for you. Let them help you select what will work for your budget and your unique style. I know every business has to evolve in a way that works for them. For now this is my evolution. Thanks for joining me in it. If you’re looking for a photographer, we thank you for your consideration and look forward to working with you.
