The last day of the year became the first day of the rest of their lives.

After 13 years together, marrying your best friend is already something special. But getting married on New Year’s Eve at one of New Hampshire’s most beautiful lakeside wedding venues makes it a celebration that truly stands out.

We wrapped up our wedding season in style at Mill Falls at the Lake in Meredith, NH, part of the Church Landing resort complex located right on the shores of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.

As a New Hampshire wedding photographer, I love photographing weddings that have their own personality, and this one certainly did.

The wedding began after dark, but that didn't stop us from stepping outside several times throughout the evening for photographs.

The weather was cold, windy, and lightly snowing, but the bride was incredibly brave and completely willing to embrace it. Sometimes those challenging winter conditions create some of the most memorable wedding photographs.

Standing outside beside Lake Winnipesaukee with the snow falling around them gave us an opportunity to create something very different from the typical indoor wedding portrait.

And it was absolutely worth the cold.

Mill Falls at the Lake is an especially beautiful location for winter wedding photography. The combination of the lake, historic mill architecture, rustic details, and surrounding New Hampshire landscape creates plenty of opportunities for photographs with character and atmosphere.

I could go on and on about every detail of their wedding day, but the easiest way to describe it is simply this: it was a great day for everyone.

One of the highlights was a bagpiper playing in honor of the U.S. Marines, of which the groom—and many of the wedding guests—are proud members.

It was a powerful and memorable part of the celebration and added a very personal element to the day.

And then there was the cake.

Instead of using a traditional cake knife, the couple cut their wedding cake with the groom's sword.

It's moments like these that make every wedding different. They aren't things you can manufacture or recreate—they are personal pieces of the couple's story, and those are exactly the moments I love documenting.

As midnight approached, the atmosphere changed.

The dance floor filled with family and friends ready to celebrate not only the newly married couple, but the arrival of a brand-new year.

There was something pretty perfect about it.

After spending 13 years together, they began their marriage surrounded by the people they love, counting down the final seconds of the year together.

Then the clock struck midnight, and the celebration continued.
