Bronwyn & Andrew’s New Hampshire Wedding Slide Show | New Hampshire Wedding Photographers

New Hampshire Wedding Photographers Blog: 217

Off all the DIY weddings I have photographed this was by far the one with the most involvement by family and friends.  The wedding was at the brides parents home in historic Chester, New Hampshire.  They set the big white tent up in the horse corral. What better why to have your wedding then with your childhood horse near by? We entered the tent by passing thought the bard and past the horses. The mother of the bride made the cake the cookies and so many small details that made this the DIY wedding of anyones dreams. With friends and family in attendance the wedding went off without a snag. Happy wedding day to all Bronwyn & Andrew. View the photo gallery here

Follow my wedding photography feed on Instagram  I share some personal photos as well as many of my favorite wedding photos from my past and recent photo shoots. Thanks for stopping by my site. If you have photo needs  for a wedding photographer in or around the New Hampshire or Maine area. Please consider sending me an email or call me anytime. I would love to help you plan the best wedding day ever. 603-367-4657

Why do I focus on wedding photography? What is not to love about being at 25+ weddings each summer. It is all about love. Family friends and couples together and in love. Sharing memories creating new ones. Who would not want to be part of this most happiest of days? I get to see this world from the inside and the outside. I get to be behind the scenes and right out in front of the crowd. Being a wedding photographer is not for the shy or introverted person. Sure most of the day we as photographers are quite in the wings hiding out in the shadows. Then there is the times when we need to capture the marriage ceremony, the first kiss. the parent dances and the cake cutting. Weddings are my joy.

PHOTO OF THE DAY – Family Heirlooms As Wedding Photo Props

In todays post I have used two wedding Photos. I know my Photo of The Day posts are most times just one photo with a bit on how I shot it or what the day was about when I took the photo. I thought that to really make my point I needed these two photos to tell my story.

This wedding was in the City of Berlin , NH. It is a small city more like a large town. A 100 years ago the city of Berlin was a mill town. Over the years the mills have closed down and with it many of the towns income creating jobs have also been washed away with the mills.

I have always loved props in photos. When they are good and they are relevant to the photo of the subject. This is not exception. I was meeting the bride at her moms home before the wedding. I knew this would be a good place to find family history to include in some photos. I was not sure how when I got to the home, but as soon as I saw the spoons I knew it was meant to be.

ABOUT THESE PHOTOS:

So what better way to show off the family connection the history the love this family had for each other then with this great wall display? This display of baby spoons was very detailed. It had small spoons all engraved with the child’s name for all 13 kids, that is right 13. This bride was the youngest of the 13 and was on the way to start her own family. I had first thought I would hang the shoes from this and capture the silver of all the spoons and the shoes together. I think it works very well. It tells a story for all that see. It for sure will create emotion to the family when they see it. So then I thought I would add the rings to the brides spoon in some way. I though I might put the rings into the spoon or on the stem, but nothing looked as nice together as the rings resting on the spoon like in the second photo. I had shot a few photos of the rings then removed the spiders web from the wooden rack. I really like the way it looked with the web. So I edited it and included it in there wedding photos. I edited the first photo with a more vintage look using a bit of a matted look to finish it off. The second photo is a basic black and white with a high clarity to bring out some of the finer details.

Wedding rings lean on a baby spoon that was the brides soon as a child.

Baby spoon with the brides name on it really add to the details of this photo.

PHOTO OF THE DAY- STANDING IN SHADOWS

There is no better feeling then to reach the top of the summit on a hike. Well but for getting to the top of a hike and seeing this as a view. The true peak of this hill was off to the left of this scene about 50 feet taller then I am standing take this photo. We add set out for a nice easy walk in the woods on my wifes birth day. We had set out for easy, but one we got to far to turn back it was a real hike. Carrying a 3 year old at times as it was to long, steep and just hard for his little legs.  This short hike known as The Boulder Loop Trail that is just a short drive up the Kancamagus highway (RT 112) in Conway, NH was steep and felt much longer then the 3 miles it had stated on Trip Advisor. It was totally worth it. There was boulders the size of houses and cars up the side of this trail and down the other side. It was well marked with a clear trail. No over growth or trees down. If you are looking for a nice family hike with no young children then this might be your next hike.  Happy Birthday Dayna

PHOTO OF THE DAY: UPSIDE DOWN MOUNTAIN

Meet Mt. Chocorua. It is right down the street from our home in New Hampshire. It is one of he most photographed locations in New Hampshire. I think you can see why once you see it. This was in early fall and the lake was giving the best reflection. I shot many photos this day and will post more over the next few weeks. The bridge in the center of this photo is a great spot with one more small lake to grab a reflection of the mountain on.

The sky and the water really make this photo what it is.

Photo of the day : Days Gone Past

On the way home form a family photo shoot I turned off at exit 6 in to the town Manchester. I knew a bit about the town and had been there in the past. I was just looking to grab a few shots of the river and the old brick mill buildings in the fall before heading home. Well from one of the bridges I was able to capture this photo of some of the old mills now turned in to office and apartment buildings. This buildings were built in the very early 1800’s

I Love how the river is sweeping around to reveal the bridge and other buildings on the opposite side of the river. With just a hint of color in the trees letting you know it is early fall in New Hampshire.

This spring will kick off the first annual North Conway, New Hampshire, Senior Model Ambassador Program by Joe Martin Photography

This program will run for one month and is open to any Junior (11th grade) student that attend Kennett High School or Fryeburg Academy. To work for print credits toward their class photos that they can use in the yearbook picture.

How the program works: We will hold a free model test shoot after which I will select 3 exclusive  models from each school. These models will be given a free senior portrait photography session, a $99 value. This will include one free 8×10 print of their choosing, a $40.00 value. They will also be given very select marketing products including water-marked wallet sized photos from their senior portrait session. They will then use these items to show their friends the great senior portraits that they had taken at Joe Martin Photography. That way, when a referral books with me, you will receive the proper credit towards your print order. On the marketing handouts will be a custom number linked to each of our ambassadors so we can track their progress and give the proper credit towards their prints.  I will share tips on how to make the handouts work for you in the best way.

I have a makeup artist booked for the day of the model test. She will go over your hair and make up and make sure you’re looking your best. What is the model test? Once you have filled out this online form and submitted a photo, you may be invited to come into the studio and have a few head shots taken. Why I am doing it this way? Plain and simple, I want my senior ambassadors to be comfortable in front of the camera and get to know myself and my studio a bit. I would never  want people that have never worked with me to reference others to use my photography services. This short photo session will be so we can get to know each other and more importantly, you can find out more about me and see if this is something you are truly excited to be involved in.

What happens next? In the days after the shoot I will do some photos edits and have every one come back to view their head shots and select one head shot from the test shoot to receive as a free 8×10 print, a 32.00 value. At the portrait viewing I will have one last chance to meet with you and your parents. This will help me make my final pick for my three senior portrait ambassadors.

When your prints are in I will contact you.  If you ordered additional prints in addition to your free head shot print you will be contacted to come pick up your order.

Then we will set up you up with your senior portrait session and follow the same order of events with print viewing and ordering. As your referrals come in we will credit your account and subtract that amount from your total order.   I feel you should be rewarded for hard work and the model that references the most senior portrait bookings will also receive a extra gift form Joe Martin Photography. That gift will be determined at end of  the program and will be based on the total number of senior portrait photography sessions booked.

I Ain’t Got Time For That. One New Hampshire Photographers View on the New domain Extensions

I Ain’t Got Time For That. One New Hampshire Photographers View on the New domain Extensions

Old building on a farm in New Hampshire

Old building on a farm in New Hampshire

Even in the small, rural state of New Hampshire we have access to all of the great technology that is available to the rest of the world.  We, as people, have to always be paying attention to an ever changing world even at the  speed that it changes.  Early in 2014, the authorities at ICANN started releasing new domain extensions. Some that have come out at the time of this posting are: .bike, .builders, .cab, .camera and .cloths,  just to name a few. There was one more, that as a wedding photographer, peaked my interest: the .photography extensions. Why would they do this? Are we running out of .com’s or has the internet become so overcrowded with business pages with names that is creates confusion? From what I read on many sites,  is that the new extensions give more options.  Will this add to the confusion and make it harder to remember the new extensions? Maybe so, at first. Soon, it will be commonplace and normal to have many extensions to choose from.

As a North Conway New Hampshire photographer that lives in a small town with a  market that is becoming over-crowed, I feel that anything you can do to get a little edge on others in the same field is maybe the only way to stand out and be seen.  Because of this, I have bought a few of the new “.photography” extensions. Why? Well, for one, we don’t really know yet if they will be a good thing or a bad thing or a great thing to the early adapters of these new extensions. I was not going to wait until all the names that I might want had been bought by others. I am not sure how they can help yet, but did not want anyone else to have them to gain a footing up on what I have here at Joe Martin Photography.

The names that I have as of this writing are as follows:

joemartin.photography

 newhampshirewedding.photography  (New Hampshire Wedding Photography)

newhampshireseniorportrait.photography  (New Hampshire Senior Portrait Photography)

newhampshireportrait.photography   (New Hampshire Portrait Photography)

portlandmaineseniorportraits.photography (Portland Maine Senior Portraits)
I had to make sure  I made time for this. Maybe you want to look at your city or state for the businesses you own to see if the extension is out yet or still available. If you have a question or comment feel free to leave them here or contact me today.

Thanks for stopping by and talk to you later.

Joe

Photography in this video was provided by New Hampshire wedding photographer Joe Martin. This Maine wedding was held at The Stone Mountain Arts Center in  Brownfield, Maine

I have added an Animoto video to the “Featured Items” of my top wedding packages. It is a great service and will really help in the sharing of photos of my clients wedding photography. Shortly after the sales session has taken place and your print order has been sent to the print lab, I will create videos like this one. It will contain any photos that you have purchased and I will include some of my favorite photography from your wedding day. As a family photographer I see this would work well after a family session or a senior portrait shoot. This will be a great way for clients to share their photos with family and friends that may not live in the North Conway area.

Looking for a Wedding Cake in North Conway New Hampshire?

Photograph Of North Conway NH

I was out in North Conway to do some shopping and a little networking for my photography. I was looking to find the owners of the White Mountain Cupcakery. I was hoping to talk to them about their wedding cakes and see if I could offer some ideas or offer to shoot some photos or video of them working on the amazing wedding cakes they offer.  I mean, what is better than a cupcake? Not much really. It is a whole cake in the palm of your hand. You can eat like three whole cakes and not feel bad about it!.  After I went by both of their locations in North Conway, I found out that that the owners had the day off and I should come back again in the middle of the week. Too bad. I have to go back and try another cupcake.  This is such a hard job.

I was able to grab this photo in the village of North Conway, N.H., along with the ski resort of Mt. Cranmore, the first place that I ever skied as a youth.

I read something the other day. It was a photographer talking about how he offers 12 complimentary  photo shoots each year. Some might say things like. That really made me think, “How is this any way to run a business?” or “your losing out on 12 potential sessions sales and a percentage of your yearly earnings.” When I thought about it, he made a really great point.  In realty what is happening is that I am growing my client list. I am getting more photos for my portfolio and the big one for me is that I am getting to try some shots that I want to shoot. Most times at a  shoot I try to shoot mostly for the client and not so much for me. I feel when someone is paying to have a family, senior or any portrait session they want what they want and they should get that.  When offering a free session to the right person, we can work together on the shoot and I may ask them if we can try something new or something a bit out of the box from a every day photo session that some other photographer might not be able to do when dealing with only paying clients.  Not only that, but it feels good to help someone out who normally couldn’t afford my prices

Well then, how do you find these people for the complimentary sessions? That is were the real work comes in. I will have to work at this. Being a photographer in New Hampshire can be beautiful and tough. It is winter for 4 months and cold for longer. It is hard to get outdoor photography done. Weddings book up for the summer months with family and senior portrait seasons on the days in between. So, I will most likely be doing two or three free photo shoots each month of the spring, summer and fall.  The free shoots will be more of a model type of shoot. One subject at a time. I may included a family or two and in fact have two family shoots already lined up this spring to kick off this season with a running start. I am always looking at people when I am out looking for that right person for an idea I may be thinking up. Most shoots will be just a normal head shoot session or casual portraits being taken outside in the natural beauty that New Hampshire has to offer.

Senior Model Program

North Conway New Hampshire Senior Portrait Models Wanted

Looking for a Senior Portrait Photographer In New Hampshire? Look no further.

This year I will be doing some complimentary “senior model” sessions as well, to get my name out in the local community a little faster.  There are two large high schools near by me. One is in Fryeburg Maine simply named Fryeburg Academy and back here in North Conway we have Kennett High School. I will be seeking to draft 2 students from each school to gift a session to. In doing so I will have them promote my senior portraits as a option for others. I have not worked out all the details as of the date as of this post. I feel it would be fair to offer them a complimentary session including one 8×10 print of their choice and the digital file their. Then, for each person they refer  to me that books a session the senior model we receive a print credit towards other images from their session. They will be given promotional materials to help with this and to track their success. If you are a senior in one of these schools or know someone that is, please contact me or show them this post. Follow my Facebook page to see updates on this program as more information and a flyer will be on the way.

Take a look at my Senior Portrait page for more information, or to book your session today!

We Had A Baby….

Newborn baby portrait

Newborn baby posed in a wooden bucket

newborn baby photo in pink hat

…for our first newborn photography session! We worked with a great couple from central New Hampshire. They had cleared a space for us to work before we had even gotten there. The lights were set up and the backdrops and blankets were set up. The heater was ready and warming the space.  Dayna and I cleared the area and asked for mom to bring in the baby.  After a few minutes getting our feet wet, we had that newborn posing like a star. Well, not really, but she was so great. She let us change hats and little ribbons on her tiny head. I moved the lights and Dayna spotted the baby. We took shot after shot. We then changed the pose and took some more photos. It was really was fun and easy. It was looking more and more like a regular photo shot. Once you know how to do something, it is easy to apply it in new areas.  When a husband and wife can team up together like this to grow a side of my portrait business there is nothing we can not do. I look forward to working with my wife again real soon on some more newborn photography. We have two more shoots coming up later this week. If you know anyone that has a newborn or is due soon please share our page with them. Thanks for your support. Have a look at the cute photos on this post or over on our New Hampshire newborn photography page.

Your History; Your Story: The Importance of Your Wedding Photography Album

Your History; Your Story: The Importance of Your Wedding Photography Album

Wedding photography at a New Hampshire

“I do” is heard at this wedding.

After this long cold winter, we long for a hot, sunny day. Let’s hope we get a lot of them, and soon! This might have been the longest coldest winter in the U.S. in a long time.  As this wedding season approaches we are reminded how short that season truly is here in New Hampshire and all of New England.  As a photographer, we look forward to it and wish that wedding season could last forever!

Let me offer  what may be a new point of view on the subject of wedding photography. Long after the guest has returned home and the reception hall has been cleaned and set for the next event, and long after you have returned from your honeymoon and all the cake is gone what will be left? What will be left is the memories of your special day! With high quality wedding photography your memories will come flooding back in a moment when you return to look through your photos. If you every want to return to the feeling of the moment you only need to grab a hot beverage and a comfy chair with your spouse and smile together as you revisit your special day. Your wedding album will provide you with a birds eye view of your wedding day.  Showing the moments that you may have missed, relatives that may have passed since that day, it may bring you even closer to one that you only wished to be closer with.

Myself, I have two weddings on the books so far and a few more that are lining up in short order.  I feel that between weddings and family photo sessions this should be my busiest year yet. I am looking forward to getting to know all of my new friends that I will meet first as clients. There really is nothing like spending the day with a couple on the happiest day of their lives up until this point. If you think about it, what is better then getting married? The only thing that can top that is having children. For a wedding photographer to be there on one of this milestone days is unforgettable.  The couple is happy, the families are happy many of them meeting for the first or maybe just the second time. People come from far and wide to enjoy the day with their family. Many have not seen each other in years. It is our job as photographers to make this a top priority. In my mind it is just as important to make the memories last more then this one Saturday after noon. That is were a printed album comes in.  How many photos do you have of your grandparents? If you do you have any at all I am betting it is just one or two and they are small images that have not been well cared for. Have you ever seen a child going over photos from their own childhood? Many smiles and laughs and many questions and shared stories come from this experience. When you receive your wedding album full of page after page of rich beautiful photography it is sure to spark many conversations in the years to come.

Your wedding is a milestone in your history. It is an important chapter in your story that only a photo album could tell.
Contact me today so we can start the process of preserving and honoring your memories in the way that you deserve.  My prices are set to be affordable yet competitive in a market with a wide range of professional and amateur  photographers. Please see my wedding information page for more about what I can offer you.

Twitter and Facebook and Pinterest Oh My

Twitter and Facebook and Pinterest Oh My

Image of some popular social media logos

“Did you forget your password? Click here to reset.” How many times have you seen this message under the log in field on a webpage? I know for me it has been once too many. With so many social sites these days, we really need to pick which ones work best for us. Better yet, which ones work with us. I know some people love Twitter. Others vote for Facebook. The internet has long been a social media wormhole. In the beginning, it may have direct email was the first “social media.”

Is One Social Media Site Enough These Days?

We need to chose our social media experience wisely and not get spread so thin that we are like butter on warm toast that can not be seen at all. You should first ask yourself “what is it I am I trying to get out of this interaction?” Am I a consumer or a product? Am I a user or a provider? This question can change the way you view social sites and in turn can change the way that people and these sites view you. For me, as a landscape and portrait photographer, I find that one of the best ways to get the most eyes on my photos and website is through the use of multiple sites throughout the day. I find that Twitter is a late night experience, while Facebook is more active in late afternoon and evening. That leaves the morning hours empty, and in that space, I feel that Pinterest fills bill! If you have not made your way over to the site yet, you should give it a look. Over 70 million people use Pinterest and that number is growing.

On Pinterest, you are able to select what you see and how you view it. It is a place to “pin” your favorite pictures of things you may want to order in the future. It is also a place to get ideas for a craft or DIY project. You can set up different boards by name or in categories. You can then get out on the web and add pins to your boards, saving them for later or to share with your Pinterest following, which makes it social. You can use the search field on Pinterest to search for things also. Then, once found you may “re-pin” them to one of your own boards. That is Pinterests way of being social. For me, I use it to share wedding dress styles or portrait poses. I added camera gear to one of my boards and later went back to fantasize about adding it to my camera bag someday. I also add my fine art landscape work directly from my print site. I might share a wedding or family photo from a portrait session and have that photo link back to my site to help drive traffic or a new client to my store-front.

Remember that you can pin anything and everything that can be found on the web. From a home for sale, to a baby teething-ring. Dream cars or photos of cats – we can always use a few more cat photos in our life, right?!
One cool feature that I appeciate is being able to chose a style or color that you love too! If you’re thinking of landscaping your yard, you can load up some photos of backyard patios or decks. Most of the pictures have links to the websites that they originated from, so you can click and learn more.

What Will Pinterest Do For My Portrait Business?

Now, you might say, “Well, how does this help me in a small, local business? First off, there is a few ways to pin some thing. You have the option to share from your website. You can paste a url into the field option. Then, you will be asked to select the picture on that page that you wish to share. Finally, you will have a space to add information about this item or page. When you share a pin that is from your site or your town you have a few options and you should use them all. You should talk about your services and location. If you’re having a sale, post the new prices and maybe the date that the sale ends. The more information you can add, the better chance you have of coming up in a search. There is no need for #hashtags. You will want to post content that has keywords and phrases that will have your type of business showing up in a search. I am sure there are sites that will give tips and tricks to getting found better, as well if you do a little digging. I know for this small-town-New Hampshire-photographer, it has been a great place to view projects and vacation destinations all over the world. I have enjoyed sharing my work at Pinterest and also viewing other photographers work. It has been nice to add one more cog in the wheel of my presence in the World-Wide-Web!

Thank you for stopping by! I love your comments, so please give me feedback if you are inspired to do so. Also, if you want to subscribe to my blog to receive email updates when I post a new entry, please leave a comment below and check the second option to be notified via email.

Sharing testimonials is an important aspect of any business. Here is what my clients are saying about our experience together after a portrait shoot or wedding. It is always great to hear from them after the shoot to know that they had fun and enjoyed the photos. Here are just a few of the most recent we have received. From a happy family portrait session.

Hannah Quinn: 5 STAR REVIEW via Facebook
“Joe is simply the best!!! He was super creative with beautiful artistic shots of our wedding day and he was even able to capture the little ones in our wedding party!! (There is a lot to be said for someone who can capture young ones smiling and all!) I would HIGHLY recommend Joe to anyone, and I have to say that anyone that looks at our wedding pictures are amazed by the quality of his work :)”

Heidi Englert 5 STAR REVIEW via Facebook
“Joe and Dayna did a newborn shoot for my little girl. They came into my home and set up right in our bedroom. They were very professional and I trusted them with our daughter. The pictures came out great and they did such a nice job with handling Avery with care, I would have never guessed it was their first newborn shoot! I’d definitely call Joe for my next family photo shoot!”

Sarah Robinson Quinby: 5 STAR REVIEW via Facebook
“Joe is incredible to work with. Creative shots taken in a relaxing but fun way. No ‘typical’ and unnatural poses. During the session he worked with 4 kids ages 3-12, connecting with all of them at their level using unique props and the beauty of the surrounding nature to capture their true personalities.”

Senior Portrait From new Hampshire Photographer Joe Martin

From a proud mother: The DiSilva Family
“My Oldest Daughter became a senior this year. Senior year how exciting with Caps and gowns ,Prom and Senior portraits.Who do you choose to take these memorable pictures and how do you decide with so many great photographers in the area? I found a lot on Facebook. I was able to see each style every photographer had and narrow it down to two I was really interested in. I chose Joe Martin. He had a lot of great ideas and listened to what we wanted. We had never done anything like this before as we were a little apprehensive on how it would all turn out. Joe is a true pro-professional brought props from home which made the photos have that extra touch. We went to three different spots in the Tamworth Ossipee area which made each photo extremely different from the last. His eye for perfection is amazing. A week later we had the disk in hand of all the gorgeous pictures he had taken. We are still trying to decide which pictures are the best for they all are extremely beautiful. If your looking for Family Portraits, Senior Photos, or just Regular school pictures of your children , instead of spending your money at Walmart, Sears, or JcPenny try a true professional Joe Martin and create Memories that will last a lifetime with each photo he takes. I’m in love with his work and he will be taking our pictures again as we have another senior next year! Thank you Joe Martin. I’m glad I found you ,I just only wish I learned of your amazing work years ago! Joemartinphotograhy.com is the way to go!

What is a Photographer to Blog about?

What is a Photographer to Blog about?

Beautiful landscape print of a snowy rivers in New Hampshire

Snowing River in New Hampshire

Sure, I could blog about camera gear or my last family photo shoot. I want to offer more then pretty pictures or one family’s story. Plus there will always be that type of blog here and there. I want to be a bit different. I don’t want to give you what ever other photographer gives you. I want to share some of my experiences sure, but I am so much more than that.

Like most people I sit and think about a new blog post. After some time I would find a photo, write a one line back story about the photo and post. Well, that is not a post. In fact, it is almost nothing. It will not get me a better Google ranking. Google looks for new information within a page that contains between 300-2000 words or more. If you’re like me, once you get to a page and see that it has an overwhelming amount of text you do one of two things: You either close the page or you might scroll and scan the page for small lines of text that grab your eye, taking in just a small amount of the carefully crafted post. We all like to share our story to give tips, updates, a news story or better yet, show you what we had for lunch that day.

I want to keep you supplied with a post that is short and sweet, to the point and informational at the same time.  With every post I get a little clearer on what I would like to share and why I want to share it. At the same time, I am trying to become a better writer and better at typing. It is hard to type fast when you spend most of your time backspacing to remove that red line under your words. As I became more comfortable, more blog posts start forming in my head I have to start to write ideas in my phones’ notes and draft emails to myself.

Now what I am blogging about these days? Well, now that is it off season for outdoor photography in my area. At this point this it my only studio space. I am blogging about photography, about my business, and blog about a few product reviews on items I have bought this winter, just to fill in the slow shooting times with some content so Google does not forget about me.

As we close in on portrait and wedding session I will blog about shoots and post photos from them. At the same time, keeping true to my passion to share some knowledge along the way that I have picked up from others or as I try new things by pushing myself in new directions.

One thing to think about and understand is that we live in a ever-changing word. A world that did not have the iPad prior to 2010. A world where most everyone has a Smart Phone, even young children. We live in a world that camera phones are better then the high price digital cameras we lugged around a few years back. What’s next? We barely know what is happening now! One thing that we must adapt to is the fast-changing times and new ways to content with our clients to bring in new business. One thing that is in the now and we have to use to our advantage is the actual Smart Phones. We have to have our sites mobile ready to be view and navigate with ease. What I mean is with the iPhones, Siri and Google’s “search by voice” feature. We need to be ready and able to come up in a search by location and the field of work that we specialize in. Are you ready? Do you even know how to adjust your business to handle this in the best way? I may blog about it in the future once I have a better understanding on how we as photographers can benefit from this new way of internet search algorithms.

In closing, remember that everyone needs to add content to their site. You must blog to be found. Once you have been found in your area of expertise, you do have a bit of an upper hand and do not have to blog as much, but once you stop, the Google Gods will take notice. The guy/gal down the road, that has been working hard to take your place just might take it.

Thanks again for reading! If you want to stay up to date with my posts or have some feedback on this topic, please comment below. If you do want to receive a email update for new posts from my blog you may select the second check box under your comment and you will receive a notice in your Inbox.

Shoot & Burn Vs High Quality Portrait Printing. What is the right way to do Business?

Shoot & Burn Vs High Quality Portrait Printing. What is the right way to do Business?

Me holding a client print

Me holding a client print

Why do I offer prints for your portraits and not just a CD?

Why not just toss everything on a CD and let me print what I want, when I want? The short answer is, we do offer the CD for sale after you have already purchased a print package for wedding photography valued at $750.00 or more. Now the reasons behind this option.
My personal answer to this question is a bit longer and may give you some insight as to why we value prints so much more then just a CD. First off, we want you to not only value your session, we want you to enjoy the session for years to come, getting more out of it than you have put in. We know the CD seems to be the best value at first, but walking out of the ordering session knowing that prints are on the way to you is so much more rewarding then holding a CD full of images you may or may not ever print. In fact, many people take the CD home, toss it on the desk and might come back to it in a few days or weeks and start to put them on their computer. A small percentage of people will, in fact, take the CD to a printer, though in most cases it is a Walmart print center or other user-interfaced print service that offers cheap printing. We know that it sound like this would be easy to do, but consider the following.
Some of the issues you will run into with this method are that you will still need to buy frames, matting, and mounting products and many of your portraits will not be cropped in a way that enhances the portrait. This type of print center will print straight from the CD, which will add extra work on your end. In addition, they may remove aspects from your portraits that we, as photographers, have included to make them creative and stylish. You will also have to select the right print finish such as glossy, luster or matte. Do you know the difference between this products? Don’t worry, most people do not. Another issue that you may run into is the size limit that these labs will offer. Our professional print lab can create beautifully framed wall art that is available in sizes ranging from 8×10 prints all the way up to a 20×34 printed canvas and everything in between. These are available in many styles to fit any decor and every budget.

You just booked a session with a photographer after many hours of research, so let’s support each other in this final process of the ordering session. Let us help you select sizes that match the area of the home you’re planing to display them. Let us help guide you to a product that will last for many years after your Walmart print has faded or the frame has fallen apart. Remember, we are offering top of the line products supplied by a professional print lab. After a lot of research we find that most people will never even print the portraits or display them after the photo shoot. In fact, the ones that do only print a few and only display them for a short time, as they are often not framed or being displayed in a way that they should be. There is nothing like looking at your beautiful home in a new way with your beautiful portraits proudly hanging for all to see. Lets face it, we all love to hear we are beautiful and loved. Think how it will feel when friends and family see and comment on your new beautiful portraits.

We know there is an investment involved with your print order and we respect that and understand that everyone is at a different place in their ability to purchase prints. If you are going to buy prints, why not get them from your photographer? They use the best labs and will guide you to help create the look and feel you are after. Let’s look at this from a few different ways. You have already shown support to the photographer by way of hiring them for their services for the portrait session, so why not show them support again when it comes to printing your portraits? You are going to have to pay someone to print them, right? Using your photographer’s skills and knowledge can make this enjoyable and rewarding for everyone and can save you time and money. You would not walk into a car dealership ask for the cheapest car on the lot and take the one that needed all kinds of expensive work after leaving the lot, over the car that is ready to drive across the country from the first time you turned the key. In a sense that is what you are doing when you’re using a photographer that does a shoot and burn session. They are taken the photos and burning them to a CD and handing the rest of the transaction to you for you to deal with on your own. We want to give you the attention your deserve from first contact to our last meeting.

Now, I will tell you I used to do just that; I would take the time to book your session, finding a time and place that meets both of our needs, then create some beautiful portraits of you or your family for whatever event it was intended, from wedding, family or senior portraits. Then I would edit the files, burn them to disk and hand them off, not really giving a second thought of what was to be done after that. Now, after years of being a photographer, and seeing the great innovations and products that have come out in the recent past, I understand how important it is to offer a total portrait experience to my clients. This is the way I wish I had done it from the start.

Some photographers think this shoot and burn type of business is giving the industry a bad name. In some ways it is. It is like the quick oil change businesses that are popping up in every town nowadays. They offer a quick, affordable way of getting your vehicle’s oil changed. If you look at it the same way as the print vs shoot and burn method of making portraits, there are a lot of the same things happening. You get a fast and cheap oil change, but the oil they use is much like the paper they use at a Walmart type of print center; it is cheap and fades quickly, in turn making you have to change your oil more frequently. And it does not treat your vehicle with the respect it needs to run the way it was designed to. With these oil services, the person working there is not trained in a way to notice, or offer to fix or repair, any other issues your car my have at the time of service. Now, if you take your car to a trained professional that knows more about cars then just about its oil, you will not only be treated better as a client, but you will receive better service, and in most cases, have more options and suggestions to help you make quality decisions about your vehicle. In short, we all need a professional in whatever field we are dealing with. Another way to think of it is like a Super-Cuts hair salon (if you can call it that). You pay ten dollars for a hair cut. With a price like that are these hair cuts adding to your style? Is this a place you would use to prepare for your wedding day portraits? I don’t think many would make that choice.

One thing I have not touched on is the images on the CD. Let’s remember that we are running a business. That business is to offer our clients the best products and service that we can. Then why offer this CD at all and why must we have a print order in place prior to the purchase the images on CD? We only offer the CD after a commitment of a print order has been place for a few reasons. We need to cover all the costs of running the business and part of the way we cover the costs is through the sale of fine art prints. The session fees that are paid prior cover just a small percent of the costs associated with running a successful photography business. Some people might say that offering the cheaper option of a shoot and burn vs a print sale is the difference between a “real” professional photographer and someone that is more of a hobbyist. I will leave that up to the client to decide. I will say I have heard that the people who offer prints, and the people who buy prints, take a special pride in the work that has been created.

Lets face it, we all like nice things. We spend money on things like good wholesome foods. Some people will eat at McDonalds and be satisfied with that, while others will only eat at the best restaurant in town. I would much rather have the service and quality of food that comes from the full service restaurant than settle for eating food of sub-par quality in my car .

Next time you’re looking to have your family’s portraits done, please remember to put the skills of your photographer to work for you. Let them help you select what will work for your budget and your unique style. I know every business has to evolve in a way that works for them. For now this is my evolution. Thanks for joining me in it. If you’re looking for a photographer, we thank you for your consideration and look forward to working with you.

Please leave a comment below with your view on this topic. If you want to receive email updates when a new blog has been posted, check the second option to be notified via email.

Thank you, Joe

Getting Ready for a Portrait Session

Getting Ready for a Portrait Session

Senior Portrait in New Hampshire

Senior Portrait in New Hampshire

Getting ready for a portrait session here in New Hampshire is not just something that I, the photographer, needs to do. Preparing for a photo shoot is something that everyone involved needs to take part in. As I am cleaning my lenses, charging my batteries and making sure my memory cards are empty and ready to capture you or your family in a special way, there are some things you might want to think about before you come to a session.

1: Get some rest. The night before a portrait session you really should try to go to bed a little earlier then you do most nights; just one or two hours would be great. We don’t want you looking tired or weary the day of the shoot. Being the star of the show is hard work. It is more then standing and smiling. There are posing suggestions, and in many cases some short walks to get to the beautiful places which will add to the beauty of the photos we will make together.

2: Eat well. Not only on the day of the shoot but the day(s) before as well. We don’t want anyone getting weak or dizzy halfway into our portrait session. As I said before, we may being doing some small walks to get to a location. We will be in the sun most days for an hour or more, with the added fact that you’re playing to the camera. When you show up with a full nights rest and high energy from eating well nothing can go wrong. Well at least on your end. This will help with your skin color and ability to stay to course until we have completed our time together.

3: Your hair and make up. If you’re a woman, something that may be good to know is that your makeup does not have to be overdone. You should come to your shoot with your normal makeup on. Maybe just a bit more then you would put on if you were going out with friends to a dance or dinner party. Bring a small touch up kit with you if you’re able, for small touch ups. If you’re someone that does not wear makeup then go ahead and skip it today as well. After all, you want to look like you in your photos. For your hair, leave it down to start and if you’re looking to get a few head shots with it up or back, we will do that after we take care of the larger part of your photos. For the guys, if you’re looking to have a hair cut before your portraits, try to do so at least a week prior to the session. It will give time to give it that more natural look and maybe make up a little for that cut that might have been a bit short.

4: Your clothing for the day. I will talk to you before the shoot about what outfits you’re thinking of bringing and what look we are going for. You will want to bring two or three different outfits. Clean goes without saying. Make sure you’re comfortable. When I say that not only do I mean comfortable clothes that fit you well, but also what you like to wear. Sure we want to dress nicer then if we were just hanging out at home or working on the garden. You should be confident in your outfits, not looking stiff in a turtle neck if that is something you would never wear. I understand that some families want to have matching shirts on for some shots, but that trend is changing and changing fast. Just remember, two or three outfit changes for each member. That can be as easy as a shirt change. You don’t need to change pants and shoes too. Ladies might want to start off in a dress or skirt. That way pants or shorts can be added with out having to change your full wardrobe. You will also want to bring a light jacket. After all, I book most of my portrait shoots in New Hampshire or Maine and you know the weather could change at anytime.

5: The last tip I have for getting ready for a portrait experience is to start looking around for ideas. As a photographer it is my job to capture you in your best looks and in a way that tells a story about you as a person. You should have a part in all of this. At some point maybe closer to the date of the session you might jump on Google or Pinterest and search using the terms that fit your session description. Such as “senior portrait ideas” or “family photo ideas” with small children or what ever it is we are doing together that day.

My final thought on getting ready before the shoot, is to make sure you have used the restroom since we will be out in nature. You should bring some water with you also. For families with little ones, making sure their faces are clean when we meet up just saves time on every one so we are not running back to the car to grab a baby wipe to clean up.

Last thing I will say is this is a fun time for us all. We will walk and talk, joke and truly get to know each other. Most little ones are happy to stand and look at the man with the camera for a bit. Please don’t worry about your children at this time. We need your focus as much as, if not more than, the little ones. In a portrait of a family we always try to get all eyes on the camera, but in the event that we don’t get all of you looking for every shot, it will look so much better with the adults or older children looking great, with eyes on me. If the four, five or six year old has a photo or two that they are looking away in it is not only cute but it is to be expected; after all we are creating a memory and for sure if your little one has issues with being still for a long time, we want to capture that also. We just need mom and dad to keep a eye on me. I have four kids and can work my magic to keep most everyone happy for the short time we are together. Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing from you. You can contact me via the contact link at the top of any page or by following this email link.

The Price we Pay.

The Price we Pay.

We as photographers hear statements from time to time, “How much does it cost to push a button?” or “I just need them for 6 hours, how could it cost that much for 6 hours of work?” or one of the best “anyone with a good camera can do it, why should we pay for someone to come do what my uncle can do?” The reasons are many, unless your uncle is a pro photographer.

For starters a photographer in most cases can get the job done. They know when to take a photo when to create a photo and if need be when to make a photo.  It is so much more then pointing a camera at a subject or near one and pushing a button. They say timing is everything. That is so very true when it comes to photography. The way a persons faces looks as they have their head tilted to the side is very different when they are looking up or down.  Know what looks good in the background or the foreground can also make a good photo an amazing one.

Now, I could talk about technique or style for days and days, but I think I will leave that for another post(s) yet to come. I would like to talk about the cost of the work that goes in to a photography business. What is the cost of doing business in this field? Well, it is much more then one must think. Just think for a minute about what it is that you do for work. Do you own your own business or are you in a management level job or one that affords you the privilege do seeing the cost to run that business? If so then you know that it takes some money to not only get the business up and running but takes a bit of money to keep the working coming in and going out.  Like any business a good size percentage of the money charged for a sale or job goes right back into the business.  For the sake of information I will give a small breakdown of what I feel are some of the biggest money hogs for a photographer and some of the smaller things that many people do not even think of when it comes to this line of work.

First off, as we all know, that big camera is not cheap and on top that a nice price can be had for even just one of the lenses used. Not to speak of the number of lenses needed to create a day of shooting for lets say a wedding or family portrait session. Just one nice lens can set a photographer back over $1000.00 and they have 3 more in their bag not only to create a different type of shot but as a backup. When you think about someone that might build houses for a living. You might not think past a few tools in a truck but for many of these people the tools they bring to a job site are just a small fraction of the tools they will need or may need to complete the job at hand. So we have covered the one essential item – the camera and lens and If I was to just toss a low number for a starting out photographer would easily reach over $3,000.00. (not including the back up camera and lens)

Now, lets talk lighting gear that may be needed in some venues and then we have gear bags, memory cards – lots of them! Then there is website hosting, prints ads, business cards, phone services to conduct the client calls. With all that said there is still more. What could be left you say? Well hours and hours of training that went into the skill of photography before they ever met the next client. In many cases schooling or hired training was paid for to gain the skills from others in the field. There is insurance to cover liabilities that could come up insurance on the camera gear too. Some maybe rent studio space and then have all that comes with running the space like electricity and heat. They have to have a working vehicle to get to venues in some cases these can be many miles form their home or studio. So you get the idea of all the ways your investment will be spent, but wait there is more? One of the biggest investments that a photographer has to make is in the computer and software that will be used to run the images through the editing and delivery process. Many have heard of photoshop. That one program alone can cost up to $600.00 now they do have newer more affordable ways of using photoshop but that comes with a monthly fee and needs to have a high speed internet connection to take full advantage of it.  Now, even after they have a fast computer with in most cases two or three running monitors to speed up the work flow, the time to edit can take hours and hours if not days or even a week. Storage of multiple copy’s of the images alone can take a few hours to occur and then the added cost of needing multiple hard drives or online storage clouds to hold all of the images. Now the real time has to be put in. When we return from a wedding of a shoot we have hours of work to do. In most cases if not all it takes many more hours to edit then it did to create the photo that have now just be moved to the computer.  Many passes over to pick the best set of images that can be provided. The more we work the better we are at not only this part of the trade but we are better at capturing the best images in the camera and will save time in the editing side.  Now some might say well then the more experienced shooters are making even more on a event? Well maybe they are. Should they be? They sure should be. I would expect to pay more for a builder with many more years of expertise on the subject then someone that has just bought their first hammer. I would hope that most would see this valuable trade as not only a skilled trade but something we work hard at and are passionate about.  Whether is it working on getting that perfect photo of your children or the bouquet being torn to pieces by some hungry bridesmaids, we are there for the client, from start to delivery, 100% of the time.

Do you have a grasp on some of the cost that are associated with owning and running a photography business and the hours of time put in not only at the wedding or shoot, but after? I am not writing this from a place of I told you so,  but a place of, now you know.  Thanks for reading my blog and please follow me on Facebook. Share my page with your family and friends and I hope to hear form you soon to book your event or family photo shoot.

Have you had a similar experience? I would love to hear about it or what you had to say in reply to help them understand why a photographer charges for their service.
