Best New Hampshire Wedding Photos- May 2016

Summer is upon us and a new wedding season has begun!. I wanted to share my best wedding photos from May of 2016. I shot three weddings last month, and I was inspired to share them with all of you! I feel. I love getting creative with the weddings that I shoot. However, not every couple is looking for artsy photos and they would rather pose for more traditional shots and would rather mingle with guests while I take some candid shots. Every wedding is different and every couple’s needs are different. I have no attachment to what the couple wants for photos, I am only there for serve each couple and perfectly cater my services to what they desire.

I do enjoy when couples hire me to create some unique and powerful art. So, if you’ are looking for something artsy and unique, or something more traditional, I will respect whatever style and type of photos you are looking for. Feel free to contract me with any questions about your vision.

I do take a limited amount of weddings in Maine, New Hampshire and the Boston area each year, so don’t hesitate to call and see if I am available for your date. Simply click on the tab at the top of this page. I look forward to hearing from you. If you hire me as your photographer, I want to be accessible to you to call me or email anytime! I usually talk to the couples who hire me several times before the wedding. It is important for me to be here for you and your partner to answer any questions and work together to co-create the wedding of your dreams.

Kayla & Dave. I wish the best for you in the years to come. Being at a young couple wedding is always exciting and at times emotional. Kayla your fathers toast was special to many there. It was great to be witness to your vows and be part of your day. You both are lucky to know and have each other. Even in the little time I had with you this day. I could tell you are both genuine, kind people. I wanted to share a sneak peek with you. Here are two that jumped out at me one a quick pass over your wedding images.

Freeport, Maine is one of those little towns with a big New England town feel. Having a wedding on the coast, just a few miles from downtown Freeport, is almost a world away. The couple had rented a home right on the water. There was the ocean, seagulls and a light breeze. The weather was great the air was crisp with a feel of early spring. What I am saying is, it is was a bit cold. The temperature was fine, actually, for the ceremony and much of the party afterwards. It was a bit too cold for the family to have dinner outside, however. So, they moved some tables into the over sized living area of this large vacation home and everyone ate inside.

The couple and the family had done a great job on this DIY/backyard wedding. They thought of everything. They had great food. They had planned out the music play-list and had enough sound equipment to play it so it sounded professional. At most weddings like this, the music is the last thing they plan on and most I have seen couples miss the mark when it comes to having loud enough music for dancing or even the ceremony itself. This couple nailed it and the sound was fabulous.

The couple liked that I created several artsy photos of their wedding. We made sure to take some time to create a few. I asked the couple to join my on the waters edge on the great rocks the earth had landscaped for us. I set up my lighting gear ahead of time and took a few test shots. I was dialed in to the exact look I wanted to create. I asked them to pose, to kiss and to just have fun. The bride was committed and focused and despite the cold, she never complained. We made some beautiful shots on the rocks on that cool, but beautiful day.

On the way back to the house. I had them stop and pose for a few more shots with them apart but together in the same frame. I am very happy with the way they all turned out. I am really looking forward to my next Maine coast wedding at the Nubble Lighthouse in early June 2016. My time at this wedding was amazing and I loved every minute!

Happy Wedding Day Jake and Laura!

Breakwater Inn & Spa Wedding | Maine Wedding Photography Blog

Breakwater Inn & Spa Wedding | Maine Wedding Photography Blog

Summers on the coast of Maine might just be the best location to spend a summer in all the world! I may be a little bias about this, where the coast line is only fifty miles from my home. It is a place we find ourselves and release what doesn’t serve us anymore. Trips to the coast are deeply rooted in our family history and I know the magic that resides there. Family fun in the sun at one of the many beach locations, or a short trip to a small village town, like The Old Port in Portland or to Wells, Maine is a tradition for many New Englanders. We always make time for a little “beach therapy.”

As the summer wedding season gears up and I am shooting a wedding or two every weekend, it is is really great when a wedding is in a coastal location. This wedding brought me to Kennebunkport, Maine and to The Breakwater Inn & Spa. Heather & Aaron had put a request out on one of the many wedding booking sites online, looking for a photographer. I sent them a quote and we exchanged an email or two. They liked my work and my price and they wanted to meet me before booking me. Once the meeting was over, they booked and here we find our selves at their wedding on the Kennebunk River!

With the day looking great, a light breeze and a gust here and there, the magical day started off perfectly! Part of the bride, Heather’s, plan was that I be there before the wedding for a short photo session for her and her bridemaids on the Breakwater, which was just up the road from the Inn. It was windy, but we enjoyed this pre-wedding photo session. Her parents joined us and we made them part of the photo shoot as well.

Back at the Inn, Aaron and his groomsmen were about ready to begin the ceremony. One of the things I enjoy about weddings is that I get to hear some of the back story of the couples I am shooting. I try to get to know the couple as much as time allows before the wedding date. Most times we become friends on Facebook or follow one another on Instagram. Hearing the story of the couple is often times humorous and it is almost always a love at first sight.story. The more that I learn about them, the better I can interact with them at their wedding to capture the perfect moments through photography.

The wedding was on the side lawn of the Inn which is just a few feet from the seaside river. They held the reception in a beautiful outdoor tent. They treated their guests with a “make your own sundae” ice cream bar. Like most weddings, they kissed and danced and danced some more. It was an intimate, joyful gathering and I am honored to have been part of it!

Enjoy this gallery of wedding photos. Feel free to share this post with guests of the wedding! I am sure they would love to experience this beautiful wedding again, through photos.

Wedding at Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa | Getting Married at a Omni Hotel in New Hampshire

Wedding at Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa | Getting Married at a Omni Hotel in New Hampshire

Wedding at Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa

Venue: Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa
Photographer: Joe Martin Photography

The wedding I want to share with you today takes us to one of Mount Washington Valleys most northern resorts. I was at the New Hampshire wedding venue The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa in Whitefield, New Hampshire. This grand hotel was built in 1865. Can you think of all the work that must have been put in to creating this landmark hotel? Starting out as nothing more then a large home, truly it was a small lodge and over the years transformed into the magnificent building we see today.

The resort is colored in a bright yellow. The sister resort to it’s larger neighbor, the Mount Washington hotel another wedding venue in New Hampshire.  Both spaces are truly grand. With the large lawns and gardens, they can host two weddings at the same time. They also have reception halls for multi-events. I was the second shooter at this wedding. It was a last minute booking and I heard from the man shooter only a few days before this wedding. I do not have getting ready photos of the bride for this reason.

On this day, I met with the groom, Stephen, in one of the great parlor rooms off the lobby, in the main building. They had some great chairs a great table and the best part was the large chess board. As I spent time chatting to the guys, they had help with their boutonnière’s and we took some photos in this great room. I posed them a bit. Asked them to do a selfie. They were truly playing chess for the table shot. They did not have time to finish, but word was that one of them had learned from some real pros or had taken some sort of chess class in school. We had our short shoot then made are way out side to the back garden area.

There is a cool pond, with a small bridge and little river flowing into the pond. The men walked to the front of the crowd of family and friends that were sitting ready for the bride to make her entrance. The bridesmaids made their way down and around the pond to the front side of the garden. The sun was bright and hot and the photos were coming so bright and popping. The ceremony including a solo from a family friend and a wedding sand ceremony. The blending of the Sand is a unique way to symbolize two lives becoming one. The bride and groom shared a kiss. The groom surprised every one with a nice dip. I knew he was going to do this so I was set on the side with a wide lens to make sure I could capture the whole dip. As a photographer if I had shot this from the center of the aisle, like i do with most kisses I would have taken the photo and most likely missed it as the dip is a wide move and the parents in the front row can block the heads of the bride and groom. make sure you know your couples plans.

If you are a couple looking for a photographer, make sure you share your ideas with them. Nothing would be worse then once your photos come back and your kiss is missing. The rest of the night was seamless. We headed out front for some bridal photos and set up for the family photos. The hotel made for a nice backdrop as well the grand view did for the bridal party photos. We returned later in the night for a few twilight photos.

The Crystal Ballroom was a truly grand room. One of the best venue rooms for a wedding I have seen in New Hampshire. The toasts were grand, the food was grand, the dancing was grand. It was truly elegant. At the end of the night, the bride and two of here bridesmaids made their way to the dance floor. They lip-sync/danced to the 90’s hit song “I Want You back” by N Sync. Ending the night with the twilight photos was great. We left the bride and groom to hang with their friends and family when our work was done. I made the trip back over Crawford Notch I was truly grateful to have been a this wedding.

Today, I wanted to share about a young couple, a beautiful day and an amazing location. Here we go again! The wedding season in New Hampshire has official begun! This April day wedding brought me to the southern New Hampshire wedding venue at Dell Lea Weddings & Events in Chichester. The weather was perfect. The sun was warm and the air was cool. With a few clouds above this picturesque venue, the day was off to a great start.

As family and friends started to gather in the hall, the bride was in the suite upstairs, adding the final touches to her elegant look. The groom and his grooms man were helping to add the final touches to the photo booth and helping their children get ready for the wedding ceremony. The groomsmen lined up and the music for the ceremony began. The bridesmaids began to walk across the lawn. The officiant shared a few words about the couples back story. How they met and their work background was a big part of their story as a couple. After the rings were exchanged and they ended the ceremony with a kiss, the bride and groom turned towards their friends and family with big smiles and began the walk together. The rest of the day was a smooth and came off wonderfully.

I went right into shooting some family portraits, starting with the brides list of requested photos. We moved around the property. The stone walls the front lawn in the apple trees. The venue had a tool shed on the property and. I had the couple pose for a moody shot in front of it. I shot solo portraits of each member of the bridal party and their significant others. I took a few final group shots with the entire family, including both the bride and grooms family.

After the formal photos, everyone relaxed and the party was underway. There was dancing, eating and family connection. The dance floor was rocking most all night with the DJ dropping the latests hits mixed in with some old favorites. As a photographer on a wedding day that has no wedding planner I take the role as a partner with the couple the DJ and the venue, if they desire that from me.. This day was smooth and fun. I wish only the best for these two families that became one. I wanted to share a few of the wedding photos from this beautiful, New Hampshire wedding day. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did taking them.

I started off this 2016 wedding season early. This was a last minute booking with a call on Friday and the wedding on that following Monday. It was a Leap Day wedding here in Manchester, New Hampshire. This young couple was married at city hall. They had a small group of friends and family in attendance. What a great way to get personal with all the guests. We had a great time together. Everyone got to take part in seeing the first look. Once I heard they were going to being seeing each other for the first time that day at the signing of the paperwork. I knew we had to set up a spot to have them have a first look. Manchester City Hall has a great private stairwell. I had the groom Allan stand with his back to his beautiful bride. She approached from the lower level and then he turned to see her there in her amazing wedding dress. Yes, they both had a few tears. After the short ceremony, we heading outside to create some artful bridal portraits. This is always one of my favorite parts of the day. They liked my style and let me direct them into many poses giving them a wide variety of photos in the end. Here are a few of my best picks from their wedding day photography.

These images are from a two alarm fire at a small apartment building in North Conway, NH 03860. The building was on fire from in the attic. By the time I got there the crew had already cleared the building and were about to fight the blaze. The smoke was thick and black for about 30 mins then the fire busted through the roof. I would guess that the flames could be seen for no more then 5 mins before they were extinguished. 16 residents had to be relocated and the building is not boarded shut. This small “inn” turned apartment complex is a local landmark at the cross roads of a busy intersection.  All occupants are safe, but in need of housing. I was able to capture these images on the scene. Please contact Joe for any publication requests.

Off all the DIY weddings I have photographed this was by far the one with the most involvement by family and friends.  The wedding was at the brides parents home in historic Chester, New Hampshire.  They set the big white tent up in the horse corral. What better why to have your wedding then with your childhood horse near by? We entered the tent by passing thought the bard and past the horses. The mother of the bride made the cake the cookies and so many small details that made this the DIY wedding of anyones dreams. With friends and family in attendance the wedding went off without a snag. Happy wedding day to all Bronwyn & Andrew. View the photo gallery here

Why do I focus on wedding photography? What is not to love about being at 25+ weddings each summer. It is all about love. Family friends and couples together and in love. Sharing memories creating new ones. Who would not want to be part of this most happiest of days? I get to see this world from the inside and the outside. I get to be behind the scenes and right out in front of the crowd. Being a wedding photographer is not for the shy or introverted person. Sure most of the day we as photographers are quite in the wings hiding out in the shadows. Then there is the times when we need to capture the marriage ceremony, the first kiss. the parent dances and the cake cutting. Weddings are my joy.

One of the best parts about being a Wedding Photographer. I love building wedding day slide shows! It takes me back to the energy of each, individual wedding and it is so nice to live it all again. This is my goal when creating a slide show for the couples I work with. It isn’t just about the photos themselves. It is about the feeling, the energy, the uniqueness of each, individual couple and celebration. When you get marred in New Hampshire you have many options for a gorgeous background. This time I traveled to Lincoln, N.H. To Indian Head Resort. I have photographed here before at another wedding. We were able to create some great portraits after the wedding ceremony and then again near sunset we stepped out to the pond for a few more photos. One nice thing about the resort is that the venue is close to the beautiful scenes we used for backdrops. We did not need to jump in a car and drive 10 miles to find the mountains or a lake. They have it all right there. Mary, Justin and I had a great day at there wedding. Like the engagement session we had. It was like 3 friends taking photos. Glad to be there this day. Please enjoy this wedding slide show of some of my favorite story telling images from that day.

Gratitude For a Friend at His Wedding | Burlington Vermont Wedding Day Photos

Gratitude For a Friend at His Wedding | Burlington Vermont Wedding Day Photos

Ever weekend or nearly every one this summer I was at a wedding. I saw the happiest of days for many young couples. I was witness to the joining of two families ever few days. It is truly amazing to be part of each and every wedding. Being the photographer the day is spent always on the move and only at small moments here and there do you get the opportunity  to enjoy the bliss the couple and families are part of. Well that was until I had the opportunely to photograph a close friends wedding. Again another young couple and the joining of two families. The wedding was on a Sunday in the beautiful state of Vermont.  From the moment I had heard of the couples engagement I knew I would offer to shoot the wedding as my gift to the couple.
After returning home form a wedding the night before this weeing. I did what I always do on a multi wedding weekend. I transfered files from the SD cards. I charged batteries and gave my gear a quick whip down and made sure it was all in the bag before I headed of to bed.

The days was a beautiful fall early fall day. Crisp air and hot sun all in one. As I left my home and traveled the 160 miles I was taken up and over some great vistas and passes that took me over mountings and over rivers. As I neared the half way point and maybe what was the highest elevation on the trip. The clouds were closing in and I was looking for rain to hit my wind shield at any moment. It never did rain. I decided the other side of the valley and as I came down the clouds tined out the the amazing weather continued right thought the day.  This wedding was at the Town Hall in Shelburne, Vt. It was perfect for the couples vision and fit so well into the wedding ceremony.  The wedding was short and sweet. There was two emotional reads form friends then the couple exchanged their vows and had their kiss and the families became one.

We headed out side for some photos and the hall was a great place for that. The pillars on the front of the building provided a great framing for the family photos. We headed back inside to remove the decorations they had set up and get ready to head off to the reception. I had them pose for a few photos in the hall and as we headed out I had them pose for a great shot outside again using the hall as the backdrop. I really had a great day being at the wedding and being their photographer.

We headed over to the brides families shop. Did i say they make amazing chocolates? Well they do. It was an amazing room. So clean and fresh. The colors were perfect and the size was a great fit for the wedding party and their guests. We ate a great meal. They cut the cake and yes we ate chocolate. They had set out a great selection of  truffles for us to sample and sample we did. Thanks again to Bijou Fine Chocolate for hosting this special day for the couple and off curse your daughter.  Here are a few photos form the hall.

Rainy Day Wedding At The Zorvino Winery Venue | Southern New Hampshire Wedding Photography

Rainy Day Wedding At The Zorvino Winery Venue | Southern New Hampshire Wedding Photography

With all the planning that goes into a wedding, the one thing you can never fully plan for is weather. The couple picks the wedding venue months, even years, ahead. As the date gets closer and you see the weather is looking to be bad. Bad meaning rain. There is only so much you can do about it. Well the Zorvino Winery wedding venue in Sandown, NH., did all they could to try and save this day. They even sent a crew out to try and dry the chairs the guests would be using. It was just too wet. Off and on again rain moved this wedding to inside the venue. At Zorvino it did not matter. As beautiful as the grounds are, the interior of the winery is just as nice.  Once the wedding ceremony had finished and the couple was officially married, we did dodge some rain drops and heading outside to get some bridal portraits. With the weather the way it was and time moving closer to the introduction of the couple and the start of the reception, we moved fast and were able to create a great amount of imagery. Here are just a few of my picks to share for today. One of the couples daughter and one of the boys in the wedding party wanted to do a jump shot. I think they nailed it! Happy wedding day and cheers to many happy years together, Stacey & Mike.

Perfect Weather For An Engagement Session | Engagement Photos In Portsmouth New Hampshire

Perfect Weather For An Engagement Session | Engagement Photos In Portsmouth New Hampshire

After days of being near 90 degrees, it was a nice break to see it in the low 80’s. As a family, we took a road trip down to Portsmouth, NH. We walked around the city a bit, poking our heads in and out of the small shops. We stopped in at Bull Moose Records and looked over their vinyl record collection for trip down memory lane. We found our way back to the car and headed over to Prescott Park for a late afternoon picnic. Prescott Park was the location that the couple and I had decided on to meet for their pre-wedding engagement photos.  I feel that it is almost a necessity to have a photo session before the wedding. It is a great way to not only get to know the couple that you are going to spend 6-8 hours with, but it gets them in front of your camera and removes some of that shy, almost awkward feeling of the start to most photos shoots.  Most young couples have not had photos done, or at least not for a few years, with the last ones being high school senior portraits, in many cases.

Prescott Park was full – I mean very full of people. They had a play, Peter Pan, starting  soon . It was quite a production! I had a few minute to locate the couple and find a quiet spot to chat with them about what we were going to do over the next hour, or so.  First off, I noticed the couple was very comfortable being photographed. He was very happy to pose with her and be funny and open and was willing to pose for as many photos as she wanted. Many times, the groom-to-be isn’t really into being photographed. It was nice that they were both comfortable, positive and fun to be around. It makes my job so much easier!  We moved around of the two gardens. posed for some shots near the trees and the fountains. Then, they did a wardrobe change and we moved to the street for a few poses. We found a brick building in the second garden and that was all it took to finish up this portrait session. It was a great day, with a great couple! I am honored to be their photographer and I am so excited to capture the beauty, joy and excitement on their wedding day!

Newlyweds Engagement Photo Shoot In Franklin, New Hampshire

This engagement session started off like most, with short introductions and a bit of background on each other. The couple lives on an amazing property in Franklin, New Hampshire. It had apple trees, open fields, barns and wooded lots. It was a toss up as to what location to use first. We picked the apples tress. The flowers had passed already, but the location was still beautiful. We moved to the barn and lastly, we went to the grooms grandparents lakeside home the last several photos.  The groom is an EMT and works with the local fire department. We incorporated some of his gear into a photo or two.  As we talked about the wedding day and the plans they had we started to build a connection that will surly carry over to their wedding day. I am looking forward to this fall wedding over at The Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, N.H.. I look forward to seeing the couple soon!
Here is a few from the session. Happy engagement and again congratulations!

“It may be that same-sex couples will save the institution of marriage.”  ― Elizabeth Gilbert

This past week I found true love. I should say i saw true love. I did not discover it. In fact true love found me. It came in the form of an email last year. The email was form a same sex couple looking for a wedding photographer. After a few emails back and forth. They booked me and we started to plan the wedding. Ok, they did the planning and I kept in touch ans added my two cents when I thought I should.  Fast forward to this spring and th wedding engagement photo session.  They knew the spot they wanted to do the photos at. It was the spot of their first weekend away together. There could be no better place. The spot was called “The Lincoln Woods Trail” in Lincoln, NH. It is a great hike very flat and it leads to many other trials that head up into the Mountains of New Hampshire. Like most shoots we meet a bit early we talked about the hike the ideas for the photos and off we went.
At the beginning of the trail is a great wooden bridge we stopped there for a pose or two and headed away in to the forest. The rest as you see came so naturally. The love was obvious.  A fun easy shoot for sure. I can not wait to capture the wedding for this same sex couple.

Incorporating Family History Into Wedding Photos | Family Heirlooms As Wedding Photo Props

Incorporating Family History Into Wedding Photos | Family Heirlooms As Wedding Photo Props

PHOTO OF THE DAY – Family Heirlooms As Wedding Photo Props

In todays post I have used two wedding Photos. I know my Photo of The Day posts are most times just one photo with a bit on how I shot it or what the day was about when I took the photo. I thought that to really make my point I needed these two photos to tell my story.

This wedding was in the City of Berlin , NH. It is a small city more like a large town. A 100 years ago the city of Berlin was a mill town. Over the years the mills have closed down and with it many of the towns income creating jobs have also been washed away with the mills.

I have always loved props in photos. When they are good and they are relevant to the photo of the subject. This is not exception. I was meeting the bride at her moms home before the wedding. I knew this would be a good place to find family history to include in some photos. I was not sure how when I got to the home, but as soon as I saw the spoons I knew it was meant to be.

ABOUT THESE PHOTOS:

So what better way to show off the family connection the history the love this family had for each other then with this great wall display? This display of baby spoons was very detailed. It had small spoons all engraved with the child’s name for all 13 kids, that is right 13. This bride was the youngest of the 13 and was on the way to start her own family. I had first thought I would hang the shoes from this and capture the silver of all the spoons and the shoes together. I think it works very well. It tells a story for all that see. It for sure will create emotion to the family when they see it. So then I thought I would add the rings to the brides spoon in some way. I though I might put the rings into the spoon or on the stem, but nothing looked as nice together as the rings resting on the spoon like in the second photo. I had shot a few photos of the rings then removed the spiders web from the wooden rack. I really like the way it looked with the web. So I edited it and included it in there wedding photos. I edited the first photo with a more vintage look using a bit of a matted look to finish it off. The second photo is a basic black and white with a high clarity to bring out some of the finer details.

ONE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS ANSWER TO GUESTS WITH CAMERAS

ONE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS ANSWER TO GUESTS WITH CAMERAS

PHOTO OF THE DAY: DON’T FIGHT THEM INCLUDE THEM

As a wedding photographer we have a lot on our plate the day of a wedding. We are talking about so many things I am not sure I could list them all. I think you can imagine some of the obvious things. Weather, lighting, gear issues, timing of photos taking, finding the location’s. There is a short list of some of the things we have to worry about the day of any wedding. Some of the not so obvious issue are things like people. That list is long. We have fun happy people, easy going in no rush people and the ever almost in the way armature photography people. That is what this photo and blog is about today.

Now I have been involved in many on-line discussion on this topic. There is many thoughts on the topic. There are many photographers that are feed up and at a breaking point with the guest photo snappers. It is going to happen so stop fighting it and include them. When I shoot a wedding or any event without saying a word to anyone I take control. By take control I mean I own that day. I am not rude and most times a word is never spoken about this. Maybe it is easy for me. I am out going I am a bit loud. I am tall, I am everywhere. I am without a doubt the photographer for the day. If i have to I might step in front of the aunt or uncle to get that shot, but one second later I am out of your way letting you get that same photo. It is part of the days flow. These family members and close friends want some photos on their phone and camera too. Who am I to make it harder for them to create memories of this day? I am the hired help. With a big emphasis on help. I will not be moving tables at the reception or changing light bulbs at a venue. I am there for the couple and I am there for their family. When at all possible I take photos of the other guest that are taking photos. It is one way I think i make it known I am there for them, for them all.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: Here is a photo of a guest taking a photo of the bride and groom at the ceremony. I had not even noticed that other guest also shooting a photo. I was standing about half way down the aisle taking photos of the couple. I always am looking around to grab photos of the guest. I mean the couple wants photos of the guest. Some came from far away. Some may not be seen by the couple for many years to come, if at all. So capture these moments when you can. Don’t miss the kiss, but take photos of the others throughout the day. Have fun with the other guests. You will never see them again either.

Even know we have it covered. Many wedding guests want photos too. We all love that gratitude of the capture.

I added this second photo as I wanted to show just one more photo that I thought really showed what some photographers deal with at a wedding. Now I had already taken a few photos of the bride and groom at the table and the toast. I just love this image of 2 of the groomsmen taking photos with their phone.
